Hey, I just found this forum via the /r/overlanding subreddit. I'm based out of Northern Utah and have extensive off roading experience on day trips around the western US, including Moab, UT. I am trying to get into overlanding and have my first major trip planned for December 2015 in Baja, Mexico. My vehicle of choice is a 2006 Nissan XTerra "Off Road" edition that I have spent the last several years modifying for day trips. It is also my daily driver (when not on a motorcycle), tow vehicle, hauler, dog transporter, etc. so I can't go too overboard with the mods.
Here's roughly what my rig looks like today, although I have since changed the rear bumper so I now have fuel can carriers (no adventure photos of the new bumper in action yet):
A front bumper is currently in the works that will give me a better approach angle and more protection for my radiator and other important bits.
Mods so far:
Rear bumper from Maximum Design
Sliders from Maximum Design
Skid plates by Shrockworks
Custom rear springs by Alcan
Adjustable shackles by PRG
Bilstien 5125 long-stroke rear shocks
Front suspension by PRG with RadFlo shocks and PRG UCAs
Moog LCAs with serviceable ball joints
Custom rear drive shaft with serviceable U-joints (ditched the CV joint when it failed)
CB Radio
ICOM 2M 75W ham radio
BF Goodrich All Terrain TA KO tires in 285/75/16 - with two spares
I know there is some debate about the benefit of aftermarket parts in terms of finding replacements for failures. This vehicle was originally intended for weekend wheeling while still being a good daily driver and being able to tow motorcycles. It has evolved over the years and most parts on it were replaced when the stock part failed prematurely or was inadequate for the job. Much of the work has taken place under the vehicle. When U-joints failed they got upgraded to greaseable ones. When the non-servicable CV-joint on the rear drive shaft failed it was replaced with a serviceable part. This is basically how it has gone and continues to go as my Nissan evolves.
