The Random Thoughts Thread

Imagine the weight. Very heavy up front. I bet they shoot low all day long with those.

I know. It would suck mightily to have to drag one of those around all day. That one site had an estimate of 2 kilograms, so great, add another 4.4 pounds to your handy carbine.....

And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, "O LORD, bless this Thy hand grenade that with it Thou mayest blow Thine enemies to tiny bits, in Thy mercy." And the LORD did grin and the people did feast upon the lambs and sloths and carp and anchovies and orangutans and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats and large chu...

I really like some of the things Patagonia makes. "Patagucci" as we call it.

But I've recently unfollowed them and some other big brands on social media. Because I absolutely HATE when brands/companies start spewing incessant partisan political crap. I don't CARE what their leaders think. I don't LIKE it when I realize that money spent with a brand is fueling some corporate tycoons political agenda.

Brands and companies need to leave their leaders politics OUT of the marketplace. Even if I agreed with their politics, they're still alienating half the market most likely. Bad business.

Patagonia has been "left-of-center" since the '80s (that I know of).

They make some nice products, but so do other "non-left-of-center" companies.

I get out to be away from people and recharge. I find small groups to be very stressful while in large groups I can disappear. I am an early to bed early to rise person when out and about and find many are not. I think adventures tend to be better when shared with others yet mostly go solo.

I'm almost always the first one to bed in my camp. Used to be the first one up, sleep when I can get it these days!

Um...requiring people to make reservations online does not automatically mean there's a record of everyone that comes and goes. I don't just mean criminals ignoring the law either, I've legally driven to many a reservation-only campsite to scout it out for future trips.

I personally DESPISE the move towards "online registration" for camp sites. It's terrible.

We used to enjoy camping at Casper's in Orange County CA on Ortega Highway.

We'd roll in on a whim and ask what was available and pay our fee and relax.

Now, there is no room for spontaneity. No room for a weary traveler passing through.

Because you have to go online in advance and make a damn reservation like a hotel.

Funny thing is, you'll see it booked solid online, but when I drove by I could see many empty spots. Terrible system IMHO.

The vast majority of my trips I have no real destination, I just head in a direction and camp when I am tired. Having to make reservations just makes me go somewhere else

reservations are a pita for sure but seems like there are so many more people out and about there has to be a way to effectively manage the limited resources (which are getting less and less of).
