The Random Thoughts Thread

Alarm goes off this morning at 4:40AM, I slowly drag my butt out of bed and get my day started. Took care of the morning rituals, sat down at the 'puter to read the news, clicked the TV on for the local news, Machelle brought me my coffee, life is good for a Monday morning. I notice that the morning news crew are ALL different people, don't think much about it. A story on the TV catches my attention, I look up at the TV, read the banner across the bottom, and notice the time says 4:10...that can't be right, I look at mu 'puter's time, 4:10, same story on my watch.

Then I remember...my clock is so old that it is programmed for the old school daylight savings time dates. It "leaped ahead" and we didn't notice it. It's a Monday already!

So I experienced the darker side of CL today. I'm selling my kickstart dirtbike so I can go back to an electric start. The guy offers me a hunting shotgun and other accessories. I say no, I'm all good. He then writes back, "Even if it's unregistered and not transferred through a firearms dealer?" .... Sorry man, I don't want your sketchy gun...

That's a normal sale in Georgia. State has no required paperwork or transfer requirements through a dealer when the seller is an unlicensed individual. Cash swaps hands and the gun goes to it's new home. It's too bad I lost all of my registered firearms in an unfortunate boating accident on a lake that I can't remember the name or location of.

At my last job we took one of my apprentices out to the desert with us for the weekend. The first night we were there he leaned back in his chair looked up at the sky and said WHOA!. I looked up, didn't see anything except the stars, asked him what he was looking at...he responded "The STARS", I've never seen that many. After some more talking, I found out that he was 22 years old, never been out of the San Diego metro area in his whole life!

Many people have never seen the Milky Way. Its an awe inspiring event for many.

Even for those of us that have been jaded by seeing vast, dark, starlit skies, take an IR night vision scope out and look through it at the very darkest part of the night sky. What looks like few stars suddenly looks completely filled with stars. I still am amazed each time I do that.

I have used a set of AN/PVS5b goggles to look for shooting stars on totally dark nights. Although not the best, they work just fine.
