Hello all!

I'm Patrick. Living in San Antonio, TX. Wife doesn't like to camp unless there's air con and have yet to make an overnight adventure with my three year old son or seven year old daughter.

I teach high school architecture, engineering, and animation. I do residential design work on the side (which is scarce right now) and am very happy to be winding down the school year. Seven more days!!!

I have a 2000 Nissan Frontier CC that's armored and snorkled. Don't need either that much anymore but they could come in handy in a pinch. I'll post pix when I get away from school.

Luis here, figured I'd join in the fun instead of just lurking. Enjoy pretty much all terrains, you'll find my wife, 2 year old, and dog all over the western U.S. Hope to venture east of the Mississippi someday and see how the other half lives!

Welcome aboard Luis! We're all about families, kids and dogs here on AAV! :dog

Thanks! That reminds me of editing my profile! I drive, primarily a Wrangler now, and occasionally, the Tundra hits the trails again when we bring guests and extra gear.

Looking around this site, I see many names from the OAUSA site... what happened? Why did you start a whole new site when the other was already up and running? Just curious... did y'all revolt, or defect en masse, or what?

Welcome to AAV Railsplitter. I'm Dave and I'm the founder of this site. We are an independent group with members from all over the USA including members from several different forums. Lots of reasons why we started this site, lots of reasons why folks call AAV home, our existence has nothing to do with OAUSA - I was never a member there.

Hang around with us and you'll see why folks enjoy our freedom of speech and down to earth, family friendly laid back atmosphere.

Thank you, sir... you've answered my question. I suppose it's only natural for OAUSA members to be drawn to another site with the word "adventurist" in the website name. When I am finished with my current project, I will post some photos here. I have some interesting photos from the road, taken back in the days of paid tourism (trucking). Model employee that I was, I routinely burned company fuel and used those 10-ton tractors as RVs to access crags, lakes, rivers, all manner of parks including show caves, the whole nine yards. The project I mentioned is an electronic manuscript with 31 tales of adventure and 10 poems, the stories complete with photos incorporated directly into the text. It has been an education, catching up with this modern literary scene, kinda like navigating a minefield... KABOOM!!! LOL. I'll be glad when the project is finally up and running, because I want to write a story on my recent Salton Expedition, something which needs to be done... the Salton is such a jewel, the scenery surrounding that toxic lake is UNREAL, with long desert views over water that resembles colored glass one moment and molten chocolate the next. There's even a ghostly Twilight Zone echo at the center of the lake... my friend and I accidentally discovered it by yodeling and hollering in our usual fashion. Had the entire Salton Sea to ourselves, of course, just one more reason why we were laughing the whole time... maybe the toxic fumes had something to do with it, LOL. All I can tell you hands is this: deal with the foul-smelling toxic sludge and shoals of dead fish without hesitation, because once you're well away from shore there is no foul odor, there are no calf-deep banks of fish bones to wade through, it's all wide-open scenery with primo desert ranges in the distance, and a quiet solitude one rarely finds in Southern California... and I ought to know, since I've spent my entire life in the field. Trust me on this one, just get out there and experience the Salton before it is totally ruined, or before they restore it and the crowds appear (LOL). I waited 50 years before fulfilling my dream of sailing the Salton Sea, but now I can truthfully say that I belong to a select club of mariners... not many sailors in CA can truthfully claim to have cruised the Salton.

That was a lengthy project behind the scenes, but they're fun and I hope everyone enjoys them!

Hey I'm Travis from Atascadero CA, living in San Diego with my wife. Currently have tacoma prerunner with some light mods, nothing to special (yet) We are looking to do a cross state drive on backroads/forest routes. I need some reassurance that a locked rear prerunner is capable, and I would like to find a group to do it with for safety's sake. Please email me or message me with words of advice, I am still in the building/ planning phase

Welcome Travis!

A prerunner, I've seen them do impressive stuff for a two wheel drive, but if I was to take one on long back roads, I'd double up on recovery foresight, like a good hi-lift jack, maybe invest in a winch, or do what a friend did, trade it in for a 4x4 Tacoma. Somehow he made money on the trade!

No matter what you do, you'll find the help you need here!
