The Road to "Totality"

One of my best friends lives near Twin Falls in southern Idaho and he may take me Sturgeon fishing again when I go, depending on the weather and snow I may attempt to take the southern part of the IDBDR and meet y'all in Stanley or if needed I can meet y'all near Boise although, when on my trips I try to avoid big cities like the plague.

One large consideration for route #2 through Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon NP, Salt Lake City and the Grand Tetons is that national parks are not dog friendly.
:gnomeThere are some NP's I still like to visit but you're right, they aren't dog friendly. If one is in my path and there's not too many people, I'll stop for a few days of R&R. It sucks but Yellowstone nowadays I avoid like a big city. It's great in the winter though if you can get around but the rest of the year it's jam packed with foreign tourists who think it's a big petting zoo. I've also managed to find great spots just outside many of the parks in a NF, or I'll try to hit one of the more primitive/outlying not as popular camp sites.

Google Map for the Totality

http://xjubier.free.fr/en/site_pages/solar_eclipses/TSE_2017_GoogleMapFull.html

Location of longest duration
37° 34′ 04.3″ N
89° 06′ 10.0″ W
239 m
2 min 41.6 sec
(ΔT=68.8s, DE405, Kaguya/LRO lunar limb profile)

Located in Illinois, and not to be confused with the point of greatest eclipse located in Kentucky.

This location has the longest eclipse duration when the irregularities of the moon’s limb (due to mountains and valleys) are taken into account. Finally, the point of longest duration is not the same as the point of greatest eclipse.

It's funny that I never gave the NC viewing much thought. Especially when I've been planning a NW Fall trip for a while. Plus I wanna go Sturgeon fishing again with IdahoRon.
Now I need an adventurous route out west. Not looking forward to the Central American Interstate drive to get there.

Yellowstone / Shoshone. I would be there if I could.

I used to love going to Yellowstone and was employed there for a while in 1995. Every time I go back now it's a giant tourist trap of foreign nationals that soak up all the camping and turn the place into a giant madhouse parking lot and then of course, there are those folks who treat it like a giant petting zoo.

I've never been there. It's on the list of must-go-to places. Since joining AAV that list keeps getting longer and longer. That a good thing. The annoyance comes from finding the time.

Oh, don't get me wrong, Yellowstone is an amazing and spectacular place to visit with many incredible geological features, but I'd suggest going in the off season. In actuality the wintertime is one of the most incredible times to see it. If you plan on camping there definitely make reservations way in advance.

So, I realize this is a ways away, but has anyone thought up a meeting place and date? My schedule will be open at that point and I'd be willing to scout ahead for an area big enough for all of us with open sky. I'd even have some time to explore afterwards before I go house sitting for my friends in western Colorado.. how many folks are going to the Stanley Location?

^^^^I think it's just you, Machelle and I and Garrett and company. Going by Garrett's original schedule Machelle and I will most likely skip out on the bar hopping in Boise day and help you try to find us a spot/explore.

From my understanding, there should be some places to boondock near Stanley, ID on Stanley Lake Road or surrounding area. We hadn't decided on a dedicated spot, but I'd surmise we could meet for lunch on Sunday before the eclipse to group together.

I'm assuming that the area will get inundated with folks that weekend of Friday the 18th through Monday the 21st. Even dispersed camping may be Unobtainium. There are spots further out that are non-reservable though. As a safety measure, I was able to reserve site #22 at Bull Trout Lake CG with 55' of vehicle space and 8 people max. It was an ADA reserved spot but because it was the last site in the CG, the good folks at recreation.gov had to give it to me per their rules. It's reserved for the night of the 21st only. I can add another day after if needed but not prior. This CG is in nearly a direct line north and west of Stanley and is 10-15 miles as the crow flies. It can be found on Benchmark 's road and recreation atlas page 53, F-7. There are 5, 1st come 1st serve sites there. Also nearby is Bench Creek CG which is no reservations, but with the expected crowds...?

For whatever reason, this link keeps going to site 11. I have site number 22 reserved.

I have no problem canceling it, as I want to camp with everyone else, but I thought it wise to jump on it now while it was still available. If we can make it work, I am more than happy to share that site with everyone concerned. Please let me know your thoughts on the matter.
