The Road to "Totality"

Dan, thanks for the call and being super helpful on our camping situation up in Totality! I'll let you post the final details.

Ok, I just spoke with a representative at recreation.gov and it looks like what's left- Cozy Cove is all first come first serve. Howers has two open to reserve and the rest (6) are first come first serve. Riverside has two to reserve. We have the two at Barneys. I'm just guessing this so because it will be a weekday there might be some other sites that open up for people who are not there for the total lunar eclipse but actually have to go back to work on Monday so more sites may open up. At least the ones that are there for first come first serve. So at some point we need to find camping for that weekend prior to the event itself on the 21st.

No, you're staying with us, that is if'n you want to?

Thanks. Much appreciated and I'm really, really, really tempted. That's a 2000+ mile trip for me. It's not the distance that's the issue. That actually makes the invite even more appealing and the location is much better. It's getting the time off.

Ok, I'm over being on the phone and this is the last change I'm gonna make especially since I lost $20 on the cancellation I made just now to switch CG's. We now have two sites right next to each other. Numbers 4 & 5 in Riverside CG at the north end of the lake. I did this because these are a 100' pull through and a 50' pull through. Giving us more than enough room for all those attending. Plus, this being right on the river at the top of the lake, we may have a great chance to see hundreds if not thousands of bright red salmon heading up river to spawn. New fees for the two sites is $40.

Quit. I'm coming from western NC.

From a video I watched last night and from just talking to the Ranger at the Lowman office. The Boise national Forest Service Rd., #555 heading north from Idaho 21 to deadwood reservoir is quite sketchy and they say it's not recommended for anybody pull a large trailer due to severe drop off's and The fact that it is a single lane and nowhere to pass so somebody may have to back up in order to pass oncoming traffic. It was suggested to me by the Ranger that I pick up Boise national Forest Service Rd., #579 also known as Bear Valley rd, east of Lowman and off of ID-21, across from BANNER Creek CG on ID-21, which becomes the Landmark Stanley Road and you can take this over to the northern part of 555 above deadwood reservoir. This road is county maintained and there are a number of first come first serve campsites along this road that might be optimal for us for the weekend prior to the event itself on the 21st. The three campsites that I see are Fir Creek and Deer Flat and Bear Valley. She said there are also a number of dispersed sites along that road as well.

Although not the best video quality you get a good understanding of the road number 555 heading up into deadwood reservoir from the south.

I personally have an issue with Heights and I'm not afraid to admit that. LOL! I think I'll be heading in on the 579 Road.

Dan, just keep track of your expenditures and I'll pay you back when we get there...or send me your address and amount and I'll send you the $$$.

Appreciate your efforts more than you know.

Not including the $20 cancellation fee for the Barney sites, so far its $40 I think split however many ways...? I'm not terribly concerned about that right now. Just pay me when you see me. If you want my address to send me a real live Sasquatch, well then that's an entirely different story.

I do accept payment in the form of live Gnomes as well.

I really don't expect anybody to pay me for the Barney sites cancellation, because that was my mistake.

For anyone interested I highly recommend Benchmark Maps: Idaho- Road and Recreation Atlas. I've worn through 2-3 issues in my travels. Their phone number is 805-968-4222.

Look at the map location on the cover...

I'll buy you a "top shelf" root beer Dan!
Has to be Gluten free and made with cane sugar or cane Syrup. I'm still dealing with crazy intestinal issues and must avoid many normal food types. Total bag of suck!
Another total bag of suck on that note is; the once awesome root beer manufacturer Weinhard's was recently purchased by Kraft and is now making a root beer with high fructose corn syrup which is forbidden for me. I read the labels on everything now. On a good note, I have lost a lot of weight though because I can't eat most processed foods.

Thanks, Dan, again for your help today. I'm glad we got things sorted.
Bob, do you plan to crash in Boise with us at a hotel Friday night? I know you're skipping town on Saturday before us. (FYI, I get a corporate rate at one of the Boise hotels, but have to contact that office for more info).

From page 3:
Saturday, August 12 - Drive from Lompoc to South Lake just outside of Bishop and camp #1. Likely campground, but maybe not.
Sunday, August 13 - Photoshoot near Mammoth Lakes and then head up to Laurel Lake for camp #2. Hike around, photos, etc.
Monday, August 14 - Drive to Virginia Lakes and camp. Explore locale - maybe 4x4 day?
Tuesday, August 15 -
Wednesday, August 16 -
Thursday, August 17 -
Friday, August 18 - Evening in Boise, ID. Hotel shower.
Saturday, August 19 - Girls fly in to Boise. Boise day! Food, bar scene, FUN! Hotel.
Sunday, August 20 - Drive to Stanley. Photos at Stanley Lake and find a boondock campsite. Enjoy Stanley
Monday, August 21 - Enjoy Stanley area, attempt to avoid dying, experience solar eclipse, boondock campsite
Tuesday, August 22 - Book it for Boise! Drop off the girls at airport. Start power drive home.
Wednesday, August 23 - Unpack and relax day off work and/or finish power drive home.

Not really sure what we're going to do yet. If Dan gets there ahead of time, I'll probably just camp and stay out of Boise all together.

So does this mean you're not gonna meet us at Deadwood Reservoir on the 21st? Or did you post this before we talked? Dan is Confused...:confused:o_O
