I've already got an autopilot switch in the Tacoma... links to the Android phone navigation software by Bluetooth... hit the switch and relax...
Hipsters with beards down to their balls riding retro bicycles, while eating a gluten free croissant on the way back to their little van, where they will make 100 grand a year selling handmade axes, do not exist in the real world.
I just finished Robert Moor’s ‘On Trails’ and have now started reading Graeme Bell’s ‘Travel The Planet Overland’. I’ve chuckled almost constantly through the first 5 pages. This snippet sets the whole book...
Honest brilliance.
A family emergency while I was day job traveling this past week has me rethinking everything about my, and my family’s, life. Disappearing over the horizon in the truck has appealed to me for many many years. Now even more. Graeme’s book is the most open and honest account of doing that that I have seen. Coupled with Sheppard’s ‘Vehicle-dependent Expedition Guide’, there’s a pretty good plan for making it work. The rest is up to me I s’pose.

Btw, is there a reading list thread? Didn’t see one but wasn’t totally sure and didn’t want to start one if it already existed. I’ve got a ton of stuff to share that would be a worthwhile read for folks here.
You know those huge trucks they use in the Dakar Rally, those awesome beasts which blast over the dunes and through the jungle and down the slopes and up the hills? These are not those trucks. The overland truck looks similar but weigh ad much as the ocean when it still had fish in it. They do not cruise through the dunes and will not be seen on any but the most compact of beaches. They promise maximum freedome and comfort but deliver half of the one and all of the other.
Given the option, we would choose a manual vehicle over an automatic but that might have something to do with the fact that we were raised driving like men, stick in hand.
