The Random Thoughts Thread

You people in California and your damn obsession with bullet trains...

:stir

Both area a waste of money. Train will never be profitable and go down as the worst gov't boondoggle ever (oh wait - gov't's aren't profit entities!) and personally I don't trust driverless cars and doubt I ever will. Our judicial system is going to have a field day with those personal injury lawsuits the first time a driverless vehicle kills someone! Driverless, who gets sued, ultimately the mfg for faulty code?

Dave, I'll see your :stir and raise you a :panicthen :hurl.

I will never adopt driverless vehicles. I think that's the key to this movement. There's going to have to be several generations that die off before it will be widely accepted as an everyday technology.

Forget flying cars, I want these.

I've already got an autopilot switch in the Tacoma... links to the Android phone navigation software by Bluetooth... hit the switch and relax...

The "lane keep assist" feature on many Chevy, GMC and Cadillac vehicles will do a pretty good job of keeping the car in it's lane, even around corners. Combine that with the adaptive cruise control and you've got a rudimentary self driving system. A GMC Yukon will handle the curvy roads of upstate NY pretty well using this, but a Cadillac CTS will yell at you to put your hands back on the wheel after bouncing from one side of the lane to the other while traveling north on the 5 from Los Angeles to Burbank....or so I've been told. @bob91yj hopefully has some good stories about vehicle damage caused by drivers trusting this system a bit too much.

We have the lane assist feature on our Forester as well as the "side facing radar" as I call it to detect blind spot threats. I like them, as well as the "rear cross traffic" detection.

I like sensors, but still want to do the driving ;)

Who is getting a tax refund? I finally got wise last year and modified my W-4 withholding and should end up right near $0 owed with $0 refund!

I just finished Robert Moor’s ‘On Trails’ and have now started reading Graeme Bell’s ‘Travel The Planet Overland’. I’ve chuckled almost constantly through the first 5 pages. This snippet sets the whole book...

Hipsters with beards down to their balls riding retro bicycles, while eating a gluten free croissant on the way back to their little van, where they will make 100 grand a year selling handmade axes, do not exist in the real world.

Honest brilliance.

A family emergency while I was day job traveling this past week has me rethinking everything about my, and my family’s, life. Disappearing over the horizon in the truck has appealed to me for many many years. Now even more. Graeme’s book is the most open and honest account of doing that that I have seen. Coupled with Sheppard’s ‘Vehicle-dependent Expedition Guide’, there’s a pretty good plan for making it work. The rest is up to me I s’pose.

Added to my reading list :study

You know those huge trucks they use in the Dakar Rally, those awesome beasts which blast over the dunes and through the jungle and down the slopes and up the hills? These are not those trucks. The overland truck looks similar but weigh ad much as the ocean when it still had fish in it. They do not cruise through the dunes and will not be seen on any but the most compact of beaches. They promise maximum freedome and comfort but deliver half of the one and all of the other.

Given the option, we would choose a manual vehicle over an automatic but that might have something to do with the fact that we were raised driving like men, stick in hand.

His section on ‘Motivating the significant other’ was gold. Pure gold. He is a character and I need to meet him.

Wow, Graeme Bell’s ‘Travel The Planet Overland book is $50.00! Love to read it but I can live on the road in Mexico for a week on $50.00. I'll check a Nook Book maybe it's cheaper?
