SALT LAKE CITY – Rangers at Utah's Arches National Park were investigating large graffiti Thursday that was carved so deeply into a famous red rock arch that it might be impossible to erase, officials said.

The carvings discovered earlier this month measure about 4 feet across and 3 feet high, park Superintendent Kate Cannon said.

The vandalism is part of a "tidal wave of graffiti" at Arches and other national parks in recent years, she said.

Two years ago, at least eight national parks in the West began the delicate task of cleaning up graffiti-like paintings left on famous, picturesque landscapes. The damage was discovered after images were shared on social media.

The Arches rock formation, commonly known as Frame Arch, is off a popular hiking trail where visitors can look through it and view the park's iconic, stand-alone Delicate Arch.

Cannon said the graffiti was etched so deeply that it might have taken at least an hour for someone to carve.

She said park workers can try to reduce the carving's visibility by grinding down the rock around it, but that causes further damage to the surface. She said they could also try to fill in the etchings with some kind of material that blends in, but it's unclear if that would be a permanent or unnoticeable treatment.

Defacing surfaces in the park is illegal and anyone caught can face up to six months in jail and a $5,000 fine.

Social media seems to be a driver of increased vandalism, but Cannon said graffiti generally has become inexplicably popular among visitors.

"It is really overwhelming," she said.

Officials hope public outrage and vigilance can ease the problem.

"We take great pains to be out in the park and around where people are," Cannon said of park ranger patrols. "Unfortunately, we can't be everywhere all the time."

And on the note, how to be an a*hole camper and terrible human being 101

This pisses me off. It indicates a fundamental ignorance that a) others use the land, b) we have a direct impact on nature and c) someone isn't there to clean up your crap. Few people would ever shit on someone else's lawn or leave their trash there since there's clear ownership. Non-owned land seems to become a dumping ground because there is no obvious consequence for doing it and there's an assumption that some invisible hand will eventually clean it all up. IMO there's a bigger societal failure here, of education and--as much as I hate to say it--of enforcement.

Does the amount of roadway litter seem to have increased in your experience? It sure does to me. Some locations and states seem to be worse than others, but generally it seems to be on the rise here on the right coast.

New and old users who haven't taken the time to choose a personal avatar may have noticed a change.

Ok, Ok. Finally figured out how to add one. Wasn't as technically challenging as I thought it was going to be! :tango

I see it here. It boggles my mind when I see how many bags of fast food trash manage to accidentally blow out of vehicles...

Now if everyone else could be like you and personalize their profile ;)

It's worse when it's intentional. The amount of trash on the road is definitely on the rise.

Has anyone noticed that the traditional yellow National Forest Service signs for campgrounds, picnic areas and the like are turning pink? Initially I thought that someone had ordered that the color of all new signs be changed to pink to help the FS be more welcoming to those that identify as female but I was wrong! I asked my FS ranger friend about it when we were talking next to one of the new pink signs. He told me that all the new signs are made from thick yellow plastic sheets and that they slowly turn pink from exposure to the sun and weather. It's a beautiful world.

I read somewhere that the journey is sometimes equals or exceeds the destination? It was an adventure, more so than staring out the window waiting for Brown Santa to arrive

If it wasn't for the movie "Heartbreak Ridge", most people wouldn't remember the Grenada Invasion of the early '80's. I happened to be on the USS Independence (CV-62) at the time.

Yesterday I had some customers that had what sounded like a Caribbean accent, I asked them where they were from, they told me Grenada. I told them of my involvement with that pop gun operation. I couldn't believe how thankful they were for what the US did back then. They told me that Grenada wouldn't exist today if it wasn't for what the US forces did to throw the Cubans out.

It was a "feel good" moment for me, just thought I'd share.

Dear Mechanic Dude,
While I do appreciate the work you did balancing my front tires, please consider WASHING YOUR HANDS before getting into my stark white truck.

Nothing tweaks me faster than greasy handprints on both the outside and inside of my door.

Thanks,
Sincerely, the guy that gives you money.
