The Random Thoughts Thread

This hit a local news cast last night. The CA Public Utilities Commission is sitting on a $1B fund right now for exactly this purpose. Why do we need more funds in Sacramento to squander!
Duh... there's a California legislator making a similar observation this very minute...

"We need more funds in Sacramento to squander! Harrumpf-Harrumpf"!

Interesting picture of the California legislature in session you've got there Tango! :D
I saw what you did there... very correct of you.

What I was preparing to respond with is, with a philandering alcoholic chief executive-elect, with strong ties to the "Party", no less! It's not politics if it's a matter of public record. :D

California law states that if the primary California budget reserve holds more than 4% of general fund revenue, that triggers an automatic reduction in the sales tax by a quarter percent. Instead of allowing that reserve account to trigger the reduction, the legislature created a second, third, and now fourth reserve fund.

That 4% reserve amount is about $5.5 million. The total estimated EOY general fund reserves between all the reserve funds is estimated to total $16 million. But because the primary reserve account will not hit $5.5 million itself due to money stored in the other three reserve funds the sales tax reduction will not be triggered.

But I think a more recent legislative action also limited this to odd-dated Thursdays and only when applying the reciprocal of the number "3". o_O

Fee...tax...it's still funding some "program" for the folks that don't feel the need to work for their "needs"...there are a couple thousand of those folks waiting at the border for taxpayers to fund their future!

Truth

I don't ever win anything at raffles...that changed for me Friday night! I scored a 75L Yeti cooler at our company Christmas Party. I knew those things were pricey, never really priced one. I'm sure they can be had for less than $450, but that's the price I found after a quick search.

Nice!

I see in the news today that CA pols snapped out of it and cancelled the "text tax" legislation...now the idiot that proposed it should have to pay back every dime that was spent even considering it...

Well, that must be a real relief to California citizens.

But just to keep things in perspective for you Golden State residents remember that it's also home to nearly one-third of the nation’s welfare recipients, more than 2 million illegal immigrants, and one in four of America’s homeless. I probably don't have to remind you either that California residents pay among the highest taxes, but one in five lives in poverty. Its public schools rank in the bottom ten, and it’s almost dead last when it comes to affordable housing.

But wait, there's more! California also has the largest state budget in history, $200,000,000,000 but they also have a trillion dollars of unfunded pension and healthcare liability that's not being addressed. It's going to really suck to be a state employee at retirement time and then to find out - wait for it - there's no money!

Not to worry though, I'm sure the Governor-elect will have it all figured out... :rofl

Loved that state -- it sure is hard to see what a decade of democratic rule has done to it. I feel for those of you that are compelled to stay there.

I'm out of CA as of December 29! Very much looking forward to Colorado and everything that us California transplants are gonna ruin there. JK
Since my daughter moved out there with her SO earlier this year, it's startling to see all the new construction and new business that has relocated to CO, on the Eastern slopes surrounding Denver. Naturally, prices have migrated northward as well. Just as long as the political climate doesn't go too far left. My wife is looking at Zillow...

Good luck with your relocation and I hope you've selected a suitable location that affords you recreation and a reasonable QOL. Politically - don't F it up @Garrett. :D

Funny... QOL is what is drawing us BACK to CA...

For all it’s wacky politics, and cost of living, there’s nowhere else like it where I can be within 2 hours of beaches, mountains or deserts. Massive amounts of BLM land and great parks too.

You are absolutely right; it is an amazing state and I sorely miss the Northern California I lived in for 14 years that I left almost 25 years ago. It used to be easy to get around but if your're claiming it only takes a couple hours to get through all the traffic to those locations... well, I claim bull shit.

If you enjoy shelling out your personal treasure, almost twice the amount of the majority of states in this country, and CA state tax of 55 cents per gallon of fuel (soon to increase even more), which doesn't include ridiculously large additional county and excise taxes for the privilege of living in the Sunshine State, well - good on you.

I think your tune will change when you retire. I've certainly looked into it, but financially it just doesn't make sense to give away all our savings to the state.

Politics, taxes, gas prices, and traffic - all valid points and good things to complain about in the barber shop if one is so inclined.
Doesn't help much though.

Best cure I've found for the politics is to turn off the news, load up the truck and go camping. A fire, looking at the stars, and some great local beer are very therapeutic. As for the gas prices and traffic, my Road King solves both nicely.

(I still look at Zillow sometimes, but it's hard to imagine really leaving all this behind.)

Well, don't look at Zillow in Austin, TX. That was a close second to Colorado Springs.
Fuel is $1 less per gallon where I'm moving.
For what I sold my home in CA, it buys a brand new home (bigger, nicer, more energy efficient, etc) in CO. It also opens up the possibility of building a custom home in 10 years whereas that would not be possible in CA on my budget.

Bullshit right back on ya, I could be any of those places in 2 hours from the Temecula valley. Easy.

Yes, taxes are too damn high. But it’s where our family is.

If Kate had moved to California instead of Colorado, Diane would be on Zillow. Looking in California. And you’d go if that’s what they (the girls) wanted.

Or else :rollingpin

Just like Ol’ Watashi

^^^^I agree with @Dave on those points. San Diego area is not ruined...yet...I'll take the bet on being less than 2 hours from beach/mountain/deserts, and Baja to boot!
