That's a great idea for a smoker. Back in the day we used the old fifties refrigerators because they were well insulated and were solid metal inside. Fish or game on the old heavy chrome racks, than sassafras or applewood was put on an old cast iron pan set on an electric hot plate just hot enough to make that wood smolder. My Grandpa and Dad must have done hundreds of pounds of smoked meat like that over many years.
