NEW MEMBER INTRODUCTIONS!

Hi there....

My name is Ian, I go by RMP&O on most forums which happens to stand for Rocky Mountain Patrol & Offroad. Something I started 10yrs ago as a hobby. On most forums I am known for speaking my mind and making people think, or if you prefer pissing people off!!

I feel like this is a bio on a dating site! Haha, here goes anyways....

I recently turned 40yrs old. I like beers (brown or dark ones) dark rum, I like camping, I like trucks, I like travel. I like to explore more than anything. I have been living in the heart of the Rocky Mountains for over 14yrs. I like to snowboard in the back country but you can keep the chair lifts and resorts. I like to off-road a lot too. I am a thrill seeker but not as much as I was when I was young, I don't chase the adrenaline anymore like I used to. At least not when it can end up with me in a wheelchair! I like to work on trucks and if I get lucky build them too. In fact working on trucks is one of my favorite pass times. Learning new things about them and doing it on my trucks. I hate somethings about it too but overall it is my bliss, my major relaxer, my way of checking out and just focusing on a task and seeing it to completion. I like dirt too, I don't have a problem with being dirty. I can crap in a bucket for weeks on end too if it is required on an adventure! Not a problem for me to get primitive, in fact I enjoy it! I am into stuff most people are not into, rare trucks, weird mods, odd adventures, pushing myself to the limit and funky people. I am a geek of 4wds without the geek!!

I have traveled most of my life, never was content sitting around the homestead. I went to Japan when I was just 7yrs old for two months. That put the travel bug in me and I have been hooked ever since. I didn't get back into travel much (at least outside the US) until I was 30yrs old. But in the last 10yrs I have been many places. In the last 5yrs I have done two drives to Panama and back from Wyoming. I am hooked on this type of travel now! I will never go back to the tour bus thing again! I am currently living life within meager means thanks to the US economy. I been self employed since 1999 and the economy hit me hard in late 2008. So in the meantime I am not traveling much or doing a lot with trucks.

I am however, restoring a 1964 Nissan Patrol currently. I sold the truck to a guy and then sold him on letting me restore it for him. Every single nut and bolt is being dealt with. It is my first project where I get paid and do it for another person besides myself. It is a serious challenge but at the same time a lot of fun! I like old trucks!

I used to have a really nice 2004 Tacoma double cab. It was decked out to the hilt besides a SAS. I loved the truck but there was a number of things about it I didn't like and they were major hurdles to overcome. So nearly two years ago I got rid of the Taco and moved into 60-series Land Cruisers.

For my adventure rig I have something in the works too. It is a mongrel of a truck. A combination of custom parts, Toyota, Nissan, Chevy and some other stuff. After my two trips to Panama though I came up with a plan for the perfect 4wd for these kinds of trips and much more. So I am building it, as soon as I have the cash to support the project! Land Cruiser FJ62 body with FJ60 grill, FZJ80 chassis with some custom suspension, Portal-Tek portal axles, Nissan SD33T-S/C diesel (heavy on the mods), NV4500 5spd trans, Atlas t-case and much much more! It is to be my flag ship and adventure truck for not only trips around the US but also south of our border. Most people argue this is not the way to go. A custom mongrel of a truck is a bad thing in the overland world right!? BS I say!! I build it, I know it inside and out, I say! I am that guy, the one who is here to prove the norm wrong. I will do it and show you can be done. Drams included, bumps in the road are normal when doing this, changing things out more than once just another day in the build process. However, here is where I am at; I can't buy what I want for overland travel unless I spend way over $100k and it would end up being fully custom in the end anyways. I don't have that kind of cash for an adventure truck. At this point in life I don't want to pay somebody to build it, I want to build it myself. I want to be able to go 70+mph down the highway, get decent mileage and be able to off-road with some of the best of them! I need to be able to fix it myself with minimal tools in the mud. I want to be able to go way out when I get somewhere, be it Utah or Brazil! I want to be able to rock crawl (mild to light only), I wan to be able to camp out the back of the truck and I want to be able to take it across Africa if I want to (and can afford it!). So that is what I am building and even if I could afford to pay somebody to build it for me, chances are I would be unhappy in the end! I am that way, damn hard to please and want something exactly how I want it. So there is no better path for me than to do it myself.

Apologies for blahing on if it is to long of an introduction! Any ways, cheers to all and I guess we will see how this new forum goes.

Cheers

Aha! Read your other post and knew who it was immediately. Welcome Ian and I hope you won't be disappointed with this forum.

Hi Folks,

I came here because I failed the titanium utensil test over at ExPo. Well, that and I never could get the knack of posting overly-glossy photos of ultra-premium gear to show everybody how much I'm spending on overlanding. OK, ok...I'll be honest....what sealed my alienation from the cool kids' website was I failed to wear an expensive jacket for a narcissistic photo shoot by a non-exotic river in my home country and I just couldn't muster the right Zoolander pose for it, either.

Thanks for having me :D .

Hi, I'm <insert username here>. I'm in a Grand Cherokee but mostly on a DRZ400 supermoto. Sam is usually my copilot and Dave, the adventure lobster, is always around.

Welcome Dave the adventure lobster! Thanks for bringing your biped Garrett along. ;)

I would like to point out that I have spotted my low profile adventurous wife lurking on this site. I wonder when she is going to make it official?

To think... After all the giggling comments about adventure bro-mances and gear lust...

**this just in... As I sit here in my daughter's playroom watching her and typing on my phone... She just tried to take a step on her own, but fell forward... Won't be long now before I start training up my new hiking buddy!**

It would seem that the wife is taking some steps back into adventuring, and the daughter is taking her first steps into a life-long adventure! :)

Hi I am Mike (Washingto Taco) on Expo.

I have loved travel and adventure since joining the Air Force back in the day. I have been an aircraft mechanic for almost 28 years.

I love to Alpine ski and recently purchased my first back country ski set up. K2 Sideseth and Marker Duke bindings. Most Fridays in the winter you can find me at Stevens Pass ski resort. I started ski bumming at the resort every Thursday night as a way to get around traffic and bad drivers. One thing led to another on how to outfit a rig and so on and I found Expo.

This year I managed to get in two great ski bum trips the first one was a Washington State trip including MT Baker, Stevens Pass, Missin Ridge, White Pass and Crystal MT. The second one was a Oregon/Cali trip including MT Hood, MT Bachelor, Squaw Valley USA, Hevenly MT, Kirkwood and Sierra at Tahoe.
When I say ski bum trips I mean sleeping and eating in the rig.

When I am not trying to ski I ride road bike, hike and paddle a tandem kayak with my GF Stacey. We use the kayak to go crabbing in the summer and its a blast!

Anyway just wanted to say hey!

Mike

Good morrow all,

My name is Chris, I am Falkon over on ExPo. I grew up with a deep love of the woods, although I got distracted in my teens and 20's and I did not realize it until I was older somehow. I have 6 yo and 2 yo sons and we live in Milton, north of Atlanta.

I like to get them out, whether it be fishing, camping, exploring, canoeing, Geocaching, hiking, backpacking, etc. I want to give them the canvas to paint their own love of the outdoors.

Anyways, figured I'd give an official Howdy to the group, looks like it will be a good one.

My Grandfather(82 at the time), Mother and I during our Rim to Rim backpacking trip across the Grand Canyon!
