2018 Taco TRD Offroad

for 2,870 yen I would expect higher quality...... or not.. I don't really know...

It's about $25. Imagine the seasonal items at a Target. That sort of quality. I suspect the zipper will be the next thing to go but I think it'll last a few campouts before it does.

I had a Pelfrey skid plate in mind as one of the next additions. Well. Yeah. So that's not happening.

I did find a 1/4" aluminium TRD bling plate for cheap which will suffice for now and replace the thin steel stone guards.

Dashtop Multi Mount today along with some "why not" painting of interior trim pieces since I had to take them off anyway. Color does not match but I'm more surprised that there's no visible runs. I did forget to buy Ram mounts though.

Plus plasti-dip last weekend because who doesn't love plasti-dip.

Last weekends fun.

Today, a battery install. Following the advice of @Mitch I went with a Odyssey 31M Battery and (not his advice) the HK-PC2150 hold down kit.
IMG_20180927_104806.jpg

The first step was partially assembling and placing the hold down kit to check fit and alignment. Using the holes in the back of the base plate, marks were placed on the sheet metal with a sharpie.

The mount was removed and disassembled. The marks on the sheet metal and the features of the chassis base plate were copied onto tracing paper. The horizontal line you see to the right of the second largest hole marks a limit for the plus nuts. Past that line towards the relay and fuze box there isn't enough space to place a plus nut.

Tracing paper was then taped to the battery mounting plate using the original 4 marks as a guide.

Marking and drilling pilot holes.
IMG_20181007_100804.jpg

Using the pilot holes in the base plate as a guide to drill holes in the chassis base plate. Locking the plate in place by dropping a bolt into each hole as it was drilled.

We're good! Absolutely paranoid about screwing up this part
IMG_20181007_103024.jpg

Drill out the pilot holes for the plus nuts, mask and paint.

While that's drying. Drill out and countersink the base plate.

Plus nut install

Assemble and mount the battery holder.

Checking the clearance.

And we're done!

I'm really happy how this came out. But. Having spent 5 hours doing all this I can honestly say that you should just buy the Adventure Wired Group 31 Hold Down Bracket. Seriously. If I had not already committed myself to this by buying all the necessary hardware. Swapping to plus nuts to account for the forces involved in holding a 80lb battery in place after having a PM conversation with Mitch. I could have been done in an hour.

I have the Slee negative battery terminal. That's for another day and another project. You can see the prep for it in the top plate of the battery mount.

Stellar work, @Greg!

Too bad you'd already bought that mount by the time I let you know about the new bracket. The forum refused to email me my verification code that is required for some reason every 30 days (please turn that off if you can?), preventing my logging in.

Moved the fuse off of the positive terminal today. I was planning on installing the Slee negative terminal but there isn't a pressing need so I left it as is.

For everyone. You can disable this in your account options.

Added HDPE molle panels to the access cab rear doors for first aid kits, etc.

Driver side drilled. Transferring the hole position over to the passenger side.

More plusnuts. Everything was drilled I just had to wait for the mandril to arrive today. Just a slight weather change.

Nothing heavy is planned for these. Still. Thinking of adding a strip of aluminium along the edges to stiffen the panels.

Intentionally doing everything wrong. I had 255/85R16s at the full pressure of 40psi on sand with the crawl control set too fast for the conditions. I wanted to see if I could make it.

Uh... you need to re-sort your load. Your washer is out of balance.
