Your road trip must stop spot?

i think we all have our favorite places to stop while banging away the miles to go somewhere cool. For us in Texas Buccees is one of those. The food is great, last minute purchases and the restrooms are cleaner than my house. The hardest part is getting the kids out of there without buying something...

"But it's just a gas station" is what most say until they stop at one.

What is your road trip must stop spot?

(Sorry this is a lame cellphone pic).

Traveling the super slabs, I'm a big fan of the Americana encountered along the way.

One does not cross I-10 through the southwest without stopping to see "the Thing" for instance. Or stocking up on fireworks :)

The gas station BBQ and places like Buccees in TX take it to a whole other level.

If you're traveling between Yuma, AZ and points east or if you're heading eastbound towards Yuma on I-8 Stop get off at the Dateland exit, get a date shake and be sure to use the most awesome restroom you'll likely encounter (at least in the Southwest U.S.).

Hadley's Cabazon, CA off the I-10 also makes a mean Date Shake.

When ever we're heading south and east of the Clanhold we always seem to stop at Gios, just off I-80 at the Woodland exit a wee bit. Little gas station/general store/BBQ pit..but great food.

I get the Pittsburgher..BBQed pulled pork piled with coleslaw and fries. God how my hardening arteries love it.

^^ I have stopped there twice. Excellent BBQ, and huge portions for the price.

When traveling into the Owens Valley, I have two "Must Stops" and one "Maybe"

The first must stop is the Indian Wells Brewing Company on Hwy 14 just south of the 14/395 merge. They have all their beers on tap so we have a draft and buy a couple of six packs for special occasions along our journey. They are also a major bottler of "Rocket Fizz" sodas if you are into that sort of thing. If you stop by during the week, their bottling operation is in full swing and you can view the bottling machine from just a few feet away (kids and this big kid love to watch the process). They also have a wide assortment of old school candy that transport you back to your childhood! Friendly staff, clean restrooms and very kid friendly to boot!

Another great aspect of this place is that it is a great place to meet up with others in your group coming from different places in SoCal (Those using the 15 to 395 route and those using the 14 all the way like me).

Here's a picture of what can be found in their parking lot:

The other Must Stop is Mahogany Smoked Meats in Bishop. Best (and freshest) jerky anywhere, period. You pay for it though - It's $39/pound!

The "Maybe" stop is Schat's Bakery in Bishop. The "Maybe" is only there because sometimes the crowds are so big it just isn't worth it. If you see people lined up outside the door, tour buses parked nearby or cars lined up to get into the parking lot - forget about it! During the week, the crowds are usually tolerable but the weekends are a different story. The sandwiches made right in front of you are some of the best you will come across and so much better (for you) than stopping for some fast food crap on the way home. The breads are insanely good and make a great gift to friends and family that have been pining for your return from your adventure!

^^^^In Tennessee they are Krystal Burgers, or at least they were when I was in college and lived off of them.

Highly recommended. Amigo Cafe, US-163, Kayenta, AZ 86033. Been here several times with various travelers. Muis authentico Mexican/Native American chow. I think @Dave and @Trump can testify that from a trip we took about 3 years ago. Oh... that Navajo Fry Bread...

Speaking of Fry bread..... If you're headed towards Picacho wilderness area via the CA / AZ border, you will travel through the Quechan Nation. They, too are crafters of INCREDIBLY delicious fry bread! :)

We usually do a pre-runner stop at a local meat shop just outside of Titusville, PA in the village of Hydetown.

We'll load up on their smoked bacon, bologna and cheeses as well as ham loaf and any custom cuts of beef if we are in the mood. It's just a tiny corner store but it's also a local institution. Also happens to be one of my happy places.

Oark Cafe in middle of Ozark National Forest AR . Old General Store has it all and GREAT food. Country slow but that's nary an issue. It's only place for gas for miles so fill up truck and yourselves while there ;) Wish I had better pic :(

I used to live in the St. Louis, MO area and one of my favorite dishes was the once ubiquitous Brain Sandwich. One of the few places around that still offers that dish is Schottzie's Bar and Grill. I bet Haggis hasn't even had this - my favorite presentation is on a hamburger bun with catsup and onion. Don't knock it until you tried it...

Maybe not a brain sandwich, but all of the southern old timers used to eat brains and eggs for breakfast... not that I'm calling Haggis an old timer or anything.....
