The Random Thoughts Thread

From San Diego, I'd camp just past the canal near the old RR bridge...

Never done the Bradshaw Trail Dave, any coordinates fore the area you are thinking of. Is it at/near the trail head?

Rain or shine, American Adventurist will be there to show our support :rain

It may not be ideal for everyone, but personally I love camping in the rain, and other than the flash flood issue, think a little mud could add a whole new layer of fun to the weekend.

Nice one Cris. I get what you were trying to do there. :lol

Thanks for the support gentlemen. I will be heading out on Thursday. I will likely be in or near the registration tent for most of Friday afternoon and evening. Please come by and find me. Or ask anyone in an orange shirt where I am. They will either know, or know how to find me. Look forward to seeing you out there.

If you are coming, make sure you bring goggles, in addition to other weather related gear. The wind that comes with the changing weather can be rough. Goggles are your friend. Many times, the forecast rain doesn't materialize, so we will keep our fingers crossed.

Plug this into Google Maps:

33°30'21.8"N 115°45'57.0"W

Head down the north shore of the Salton Sea along Hwy 111 (Grapefruit Blvd). You'll need to leave pavement and go dirt a bit to the canal. Follow the canal road to these coords. That is the trailhead at the canal crossing for coming to DRV via the Bradshaw Trail/Bradshaw Rd. Follow this trail until you see a cool RR trestle. You have arrived.

Water...

SoCal is using water faster than reservoirs are filling. I'm not an alarmist, I'm certain that there will be water at my tap when needed in my lifetime, but it's going to run out eventually.

I just read this article, made me think a bit about my water usage.

http://www.takepart.com/article/201...ry-america’s-foolish-allegiance-bottled-water

I've converted my front yard from grass to cactus and succulents that are all drought tolerant. My back yard isn't that big, mostly drought tolerant plants on the terraces, and a 30'x80' patch of grass that I do my best to keep green. Dogs and grandkids are hard on the grass, but it usually looks decent.

I drink most of my water from plastic bottles. My wife doesn't care for our tap water, even the filtered stuff out of the 'fridge. I think I drink from the plastic bottles just because of their convenience. At work we have a filtered water machine that I get my water from...in a Styrofoam cup! For whatever reason it has never occurred to me to try a reusable water bottle.

Just some food for thought.

I'd guess that a pretty good percentage of the people here are already doing this. What do you guys use on the trail? I usually freeze my water bottles, I like my water cold. Any tricks other than getting the larger size water bottles? I'm not looking to go suck water out of a gutter and filter it to make it drinkable. Taking a shot at doing my little part to help with the plastic bottle problem.

I got a couple of Hydroflasks at OVX 2 years ago and love them. I have broken 2 lids (I have dropped it alot) but replacement lids are only $4

Here's a random thought... Coming from my personal peeves, this has nothing to do with me being a forum admin.

Tapatalk's built in signatures. In every post made with it? Really?!

Does that app give you the option to shut that off?

Yes you can turn it off. I haven't bothered. But maybe I'll look into it.

Holy Crap. Did VW cross an Avalanche and Ridgeline to come up with something that ugly?

Not sure if we aren't getting it here because of the diesel engine or it's looks (we already have Nancy Pelosi and Barbara Boxer, adding that thing would tilt the machine).

Daylight Savings Time was explained to a Native American. He thought about it for a moment and replied:

"Only a white man could believe that if you cut a piece from one end of a blanket, and sewed it on the other end, you have a longer blanket."

My sister joined the Guard and went to boot camp at the age of 38. She did two tours in the sand box. Happy to say that she came home with no extra holes in her.

She works for United Healthcare now, and is an avid biker involved with the Wounded Warrior program. Here is a short video that United Healthcare put together about her.

Very cool Bob!

My random thought of the day... I can't help but think about how cool it would be if I could go back to the 60's era when all the managers with offices had a wet bar in their office. There are some days (most days) when this would be very appealing! :)

So happy to report that a gentleman's agreement can still be had. I sold some lights that I won to a member here. We used the trust system... I sent him the lights, he sent me a check. I had a "hook up" on the shipping, passed that savings along to the buyer. No PayPal or any of that other nonsense required. Done deal, the way it should be.

Its soo rare to see something like that happen. Congrats
