The Random Thoughts Thread

Having said that we've also used a couple of sets of jumper cables, two batteries, 4 pairs of sunglasses for eye protection and a radio antenna for rod. The weld looked like ass but it got the vehicle off of the trail.

Epic! :popcorn

Guess I'm one of "those guys" with air tools (cut-off wheel and an impact). Naturally, all 10 pounds of that weight required a new suspension, a SAC, and V8 engine.

What I carry is driven by what I've experienced on the trail, not necessarily by me, but from other unfortunate outcomes. To that end, I carry more than most, but I've helped more than just myself. YMMV

^^^^Not necessarily...when I'm loaded for a long trip or a desert race, in addition to a full complement of hand tools, I carry a 1/2" impact, 1/4" impact, angle grinder, drill, reciprocating saw, (all DeWalt 18v stuff, one battery charger and interchangeable batteries) and the welder that I posted earlier. In addition I have a floor jack, bottle jack and a few other items that escape me at the moment. An old timer buddy and my men tor into the off highway world always told me that he'd rather be "looking at it than looking for it".

I've slowly migrated towards the comfort/convenience items over the years, but if its a toss up between a comfort/convenience item vs a tool that I think I might have a use for, the tool gets the call. When travelling with a group, we compare notes and split the load out between us. There is no need for all 5 of us (or however many are in the group) to all have a Hi-Lift jack for instance.

Possibly old news, first I've seen it...the Army's new off highway vehicle...

Three minute YouTube video of a Toyota "Hilux" with custom camper body moving around Iceland. Awesome Scenery! Many of the internal roads in Iceland are not only gravel, there are no bridges, just fords!

For anyone that likes landscaping...I was walking in my backyard along the fence and felt a soft spot. I looked over the fence and saw the problem. I went to the neighbor and asked permission to take pictures.
How to fix this??? cinder block retaining wall? They've already put up wood and some landscaping blocks, but not a proper retaining wall. That hole goes about 2 feet back and is held up in my yard by the gopher wire/weedblock material.

...and no, the neighbor isn't going to plant anything in their yard. They're never back there and don't really care.

If they don't fix the drainage on their side you're probably fighting a losing battle. You can get the city involved if it becomes an issue.

Ask me about that one around a campfire sometime.

After spending the day doing vehicle maintenance and detailing, I believe there's a valid need for a car manufacturer to create an advertising campaign based on the following:

- Easiest wheels to clean

- Bug resistant grills

- Easiest oil filter to change

- Easily accessible headlight/turn signal bulbs

I apparently own vehicles with none of these features. If only I'd known.
