We came upon such a group when we were heading to DRV this year. It’s apparently a family business that comes up from Guatemala (IIRC) a few times a year, buys these old Toyotas, and returns home to sell them off to be repaired or as parts. The family is able to live of the proceeds the rest of the year, I was told.
I knew a guy in college from Brazil. He paid his way through college by completely disassembling two dirt bikes and packing them into two suitcases and bringing them back to Brazil twice a year, at Christmas and at the end of the school year. He wouldn’t pack the tires but would pack pretty much everything else, put them together when he got home and sell them.
I've been watching online auctions of salvaged KLR 650's sell for more than new bikes to South American bidders. Where there's demand there are always enterprising individuals capitalizing on it I suppose.
