We we’re heading over Wyoming Route 26 from Moran towards Dubious passing through the Shoshone NF when a dirt road beckoned us to travel it..

It lead us to Brook Lake, we didn’t want to leave.

But we did. We are making our way back east but Wyoming is a seductive wench and we kept slipping back into her embrace and pulled from our course back to the Appalachias…

Further east Wyoming flashed us an intriguing dirt road into BLM lands towards someplace known as Castle Garden. We didn’t make it to the Garden but what a splendid road it was. After getting cell service, we wished we had kept on driving once we researched the site.

Castle Gardens and Brooks Lake are now added to my list.

I have not noticed any photos of the GFC setup yet. I assume since you were keeping gear to a minimum there is not much to show, but what are your early impressions. Comfortable? Warm? Ease of use?

We’ve only popped the tent a couple of times. Twice for afternoon naps ( it’s awesome for after strenuous hiking naps) and last night when we rolled into South Dakota. It’s been in the teens at night and it’s just too cold for Michelle without heat. That and we brought the bare minimum of gear. The fabric has a good feel but it’s not as nice as the Maggiolina. Bed feels bigger with the tent up, vertical height I suppose. Last night near Spearfish it stayed in the 40’s. It was dark when we set up but we had everything arranged in minutes. Mattresses are firm but not bad. Takedown takes just minutes. Haven’t snapped any tent pics yet cause it was dark or I was too tuckered to give a damn. Once we get home I’ll start a GFC specific thread detailing this thing. Still too early to give it a solid review but we like it so far and checks off the majority off boxes we were looking to fill.

Dont anybody rush out and buy one yet lol!

You convinced me - next October, I am going to Yellowstone.

When you go, either on the way or returning, drive from Buffalo, WY through Worland, Thermopolis, Shoshone, Dubious and than Moran on the east side of Grand Teton. Some of the most dramatic and picturesque drives we’ve ever done. You‘ll pass through Big Horn, Shoshone and Bridger Teton Nation Forests and multiple mountain ranges. It’s spectacular and there’s so many spurs leading off. We are coming back to explore this area as soon as we can.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Let's meet there next year! ARV to Wyoming - road trip!

If you are still near Thermopolis, stop at the Wyoming Dinosaur Center. The outside of the building doesn't look like much, but it is an amazing museum.

We saw that place and another museum (Worland?). Both looked cool but as we were constantly being pulled into the National Forests we didn’t have time to indulge. Michelle wants to do a two week wander through that section in warmer temps and we plan on visiting both.

Again a snare cast at us by Wyoming caught us, this time it was a sign for a lookout.

We turned out onto a forest road muddied by the melting snow. The goo was thick as molasses and just about as clinging.

At the end of the trail was a small wooden watch cabin on a rocky summit. A hiking trail headed up to it but it was covered in ice and snow and was pretty treacherous path to tread. We decide to forgo the hike because of this.

The last stop was a quick turnout for Meadow Lark Lake…

And than all too soon we were out of the mountains and Forests and back on interstate heading back east beyond Buffalo, Wyoming. We would end up finishing the day outside of Spearfish, SD.

4800 miles later…

Average gas mileage on the way out with tonneau cover and limited gear = 16.7 mpg.

17.1 was the best mileage, 16.4 was the worst.

Average gas mileage once the GFC camper was installed and same gear = 15.6

16.7 was the best mileage, 14.4 was the worst.

The two caveats to this…

On the way back we were in more mountainous terrain and were doing a small bit of 4x4 engaged.

The GFC is unnoticeable until you get a stiff crosswind and than you can feel the push.

If you just consider the miles on just the interstate routes the tonneau still rates at 16.7 mpg and the GFC comes in at 15.9. So about 1 mpg loss with the brick on back.

Wind noise is light and hardly noticeable unless you hit the wind just right. Even than it’s a slight drone, that’s what radios are for. Panels lock down tight and there is no rattle. We flexed the truck moderately on a couple Forest roads in Shoshone and the camper didn’t care. Pretty happy with its on road performance but am waiting for some rain to test out water ingress.
