Border Trails: Marron Valley, Sycamore Canyon & Otay Mountains - November 2008

Fun run today! I met up with my friend Craig in his FJ at the AM/PM station in Jamul. We headed over to Pio Pico campground and met up with Denis and his Rubicon around 10am. We went back out to Hwy94 and down to Marron Valley and checked out the newly dozed trail that Border Patrol will use to have easier access to the area. After turning around, we went the opposite direction and headed East along the border climbing into the hills for some fantastic views. We a saw six horses grazing on the hillside. We turned around and headed back over to the Otay Truck Trail and turned off into Sycamore Canyon where we found a hunter who got his 2WD Ford F-150 stuck going up the by-pass trail next to the dry waterfall. I handed the guy a shovel and had him dig out some dirt in front of the buried wheel and was able to pull him up and out. Craig tried going up the dry waterfall, but alas, it was just to loose and it beat him. He wasn't aired down and didn't feel like doing so just for that area. We continued out through the canyon past the old homestead and out to Hwy94 where we parted ways and headed home. All in all a pretty easy run with the most difficult part being the little rock garden behind the old homestead. The whole area desperately needs some rain... the dust was like talcum powder in places. Another fun day on the backroads!

Photos Denis took.

Ocotillo & Yuha Desert - November 2008

Well, it turned out to be a great day, exploring our local deserts even though things didn't go quite as planned. We ran into far too many locked gates. All the routes I had wanted to take into Davis Valley and Jacumba Mountains from the desert floor were blocked and locked. As it turns out, Davis Valley is a designated Wilderness Area. I hate that existing dirt roads get closed off because of those! So, we ended up dropping down into Pinto Wash, where the US/Mexican border as been graded into a very wide, flat road. A little ways away was a fenced yard with all the heavy equipment. One of the officers we ran into advised us to stay a bit north. Afterwards, we drove back towards Ocotillo and explored some very rocky trails.

On the way out.

Anza-Borrego & Ocotillo Wells SVRA - October 2008

Well I rolled out of town real early saturday to prerun my friday route for the upcoming BorregoFest event. The weather was great. Maybe 91 at the most. It wasn't until the end of the run that I actually started running into other folks having fun in the desert. Other than a few jack rabbits and a pack of coyotes, I had the whole area to myself! On the way back I decided to head up into Coyote Canyon. The third crossing still has a good amount of water in it and I came up on some Toyotas that were having a tough time getting up boulder alley. It seems that when the park went in there and smashed up some of the rocks, it created a lot of loose, low traction areas. It was great getting way from it all!

Making my way along Buttes Pass Road, just east of Ocotillo Wells.

Superstition Mountain OHV Area - December 2008

Friday night I headed on out with my brother-in-law and a friend to camp out and explore a bit of Superstition Mountain. I've only been there once before at night, so this was a real treat for me to explore a new area. The other guys brought out their dirt bikes, while I cruised the easy rolling sand dunes in my comfy Jeep. This area would make a good place for an event, with the large flat area suited to trailers, RV's, tents, etc. I only just got a taste of the area, as I had to be back home Saturday night. Stupid me forgot the camera on our big run on out to Sand Damn Canyon and surrounding areas. The wind picked up at times but was just fine when we were out on the trails. I really need to get the frame for my soft top. It was cold on the way home!

Arroyo Tapiado Canyon Mud Caves, Sandstone Canyon & Fish Creek to Split Rock, ABDSP - December 2008

We all met at Dudley's at 7AM and gassed up in Santa Ysabel. There was a lot of snow and it was around 30 degrees as we went through Julian and down Banner grade. We headed down the Great Southern Overland Stage Route and over to Arroyo Tapiado to the Mud caves where we explored one of the caves. From there we back-tracked to Arroyo Seco del Diablo Canyon to Diablo Dropoff to Fisk Creek Wash to Sandstone Canyon, where we stopped to have lunch. After lunch we continued up Fish Creek past split rock and found some more snow. We turned around at a point that would make it pretty hairy to get back thru and headed back to Fish Creek and out through Split Mtn. We then headed West on the 78 and cut across on Butte's Pass. There was really thick, slicked, gooey mud along the pass that made for lots of spinning, sliding and fish tails... what a blast! We made it out to Font's Point just in time for the sunset... always a gorgeous sight! After gassing up in Borrego Springs, we said our goodbyes and headed for home. All in all, another great day of wheeling and company.

We met here.

Hike to Kitchen Creek Falls, Cleveland National Forest - January 2009

On the southern slopes of the Laguna Mountains, the Pacific Crest Trail passes just 200 yards above a hidden series of waterfalls in Kitchen Creek. Here, water from about 20 square miles of drainage flows through a narrow section in the bedrock, and tumbles about 150 vertical feet over water-polished slabs. Now that was a fun climb!

After a major storm passes through, the sound of falling water gives away the location of the falls; at other times, finding them may be a bit difficult A short stretch of moderate scrambling is required to reach them. I parked just outside Boulder Oaks Campground off Old Highway 80, strapped on my backpack and off I went!

Colorado River & Picacho State Recreation Area - March 2009

Well i had a great time at one of my favorite camping areas along Ferguson Lake, just off the Colorado River. I arrived friday night to find one of my cousins there as well. It was great to catch up again and we fished and drank until around 3am. Its kinda funny, no matter how late I stay up there I always manage to wake up early the next day. Most of saturday was spent hiking through a few slot-canyons and driving along an old jeep trail. The terrain is all just very rocky and loose so I didn't want to get too far into the backcountry without another rig to help out. With all the recent rain everything was much greener and blooming more than I've seen in a long time there. As the sun started to set I got all my fishing gear ready again and started dinner. I haven't caught that many catfish in a while! Mostly one to two pounders with the occasional six or eight. I was too wore out from the day of exploring to keep any so I just released them all.

Supertition Mountain OHV Area Luau - April 2009

It turned out to be a very nice weekend out in the desert. Got a little too much sun, though. Anyway, I met up with Steve Saturday morning and headed on out. Once we got down there we figured to just keep an eye out for the large group of FJ's.

Once I got all my gear unloaded and camp set up, Steve and I tore off onto the mountain for some fun. We cruised along the rolling sand dunes toward Sand Dam and then along a narrow tail atop a high ridge to the north side of the mountain. We tried looking for the trailhead to Knock-on-Wood trail but missed it. On the way back we hit up Lucky Lady Trail and found a few rocky areas to play in. The next day, we looped around the north side again and tried squeezing through a few narrow rocky trails, such as Wrangler Canyon. One lead us to this gnarly rock ledge/waterfall. Tried as I might, I couldn't get up it. So on we went to Sand Dam Canyon and back to camp. This was only my third time out there and although it's not that vast of an area, there's still a lot to explore.
