REI

The bathrooms in REI are always quite clean and the nearest store is on the way home from a number of great restaurants that friends and I like to frequent.

Ah, I see. You have your own "dividend program." Membership has its rewards.

Ha, my commuter is a '92 Mazda Miata, 30 MPG, fun to drive, can park it at the bicycle rack, paid for, stupid proof. I sure caught some grief from some of my buddies. I'm old, my doc says I'm fat, and I don't give a rat's nether regions what people think anymore! If it meet's my needs, that's all I need!

"Rolling coal" is mentioned here multiple times? What is it?
Essentially, "rolling coals a stupid term used in the diesel truck market. When you put a performance tuner on tour diesel truck, often times unburnt fuel will spew out the exhaust in the form of black smoke, jwhich is referred to as Rollin coal.... not my style, my trucks engine is bone stock, but some people like it I guess.

Actually the term refers to modifications deliberately made to a diesel truck to allow the driver to spew sooty black smoke at will, notably over bicyclists and . . . Prius drivers. Isn't that clever?

it is pretty popular with the "Bro" crowd in the Inland Empire and High Desert areas of Southern CA. It is one of those things that makes everyone in a truck look bad.

It's popular out in Texas as well, as are smoke stacks, confederate flags, and throwing used beer cans out the window. Often these manifest themselves all at once. 'Murica!

Hey now, I'm in the high desert and I have a CTD with a mild tuner on it. It helps me with both power and mileage but occasionally belches out a little black smoke, especially under load up hill or from a dead start, but nothing like in the video. I actually have to be careful with throttle input sometimes as a result. I'm also a road cyclist and haven't had anyone do that to me up here, but there have been plenty of other jackhole moments from the flatbillers during my rides.

Full disclosure, I also shop at REI, so I don't know what camp that puts me in.

That's some serious redneck. Once it passed you can't see the truck and it looks much like an old locomotive. I think I'd be kinda disgusted if I witnessed that. A Prius on fire, now that's ok with me:)

Someone sounds a little defensive about rolling coal (which I would love to see from the XP Camper)

I actually put a downpipe on to direct it to the ground because it was dis coloring that corner of the flatbed and camper a little. Mine is no where near as bad as the video though. It's usually just a belch if I go to pass someone going up hill. Although I have accidentally romped on it from a right turn, laid down some rubber, and left a bit of a "coal" trail. Not what you'd expect from a truck camper.

When the newer diesels go into "regeneration mode" to clean the particulate trap, raw fuel and DEF are being injected into the particulate trap, which can cause black smoke as well. Obviously not as bad as the deliberate "rolling coal" morons, but it does happen.

^^^^I kind of like the wheels on your Miata, what size rubber is on them? I'm sold on the Michelins that are on mine. I have beat the snot out of them since I've had the car, they rarely even chirp and I've only broken them loose in a turn a couple of times. I'm not Mario or anything, but I think I can hot foot it through the twisties at a respectable clip.

I will admit that the car in stock trim is still a better car than I am a driver. Fortunately it's also rather forgiving when I get in over my head.

When I was a kid, an MGB or really a Triumph TR-6 were my dream cars. When I got old enough to own one, I realized how many hours of labor go into each hour of driving (kind of like Land Rovers:dunno), went with a low mile, well maintained Miata instead, along with the initial abuse from my friends about the stereo typical Miata owner.

Back to the public flogging of REI. (except for Dave, he's going to help finance the Sierra Club, and reserve the right to complain about their members)

I shop at REI when I need something the local place, Peace Surplus, doesn't carry. Although, I'm surprised our small town even has an REI.

CBD has good intentions, sometimes, but is overly zealous at other times.

As Jonathan said, and to paraphrase, "I want more warships and more wilderness." Correct me if that is entirely wrong Jonathan.
