Java's F450 'Rough Road' RV

Maintenance time! 127k miles now.

Air filter.... Well that looks dirty compared to a new one.... White balance of my camera makes it look worse than it is, but still. Its noticeably heavier.....

Thoughts on snorkel? I have been thinking of DIY'ing one.... Not sure how much it would help, nor am I sure 4" would flow enough (thats what the Aussies are using on the newer Ford snorkels tho)

Along these lines, Donaldson Top, 4" tube, hopefully less bends on mine.

Did the primary fuel filter also, no pics as I was covered in diesel.... But I don't like the Wix filter, its a little different design than OE. Will proably swap
it for an OE one shortly.
 
I cut it open. I was holding A LOT of dirt!

Look at the bench under where I cut it... Second pic is a pleat opened up on the engine side.

Kiddo cleaned the place up, there was a fair bit of trash. Came home with 8lbs of brass....

Then up early to find a big slab of rock :D Ended up being super chossy, but it was fun to explore a new area.

And now the not so fun..... Truck is kinda running like crap!

under 1700rpms, no power, lots of smoke. Once moving and things are spooled over ~10 psi it clears up, but man its a smoke show from a stop. It will also smoke on demand when you step on it now. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software, no luck. I am guessing either boost or exhaust leak.

Googling Similar symptoms show a few common items:

EBP Sensor
MAP Sensor

Or the EGR valve being blown open a little due to high boost. (its turned off/closed via the tuner, but I also did blow one of the charge air boots off, maybe it was a high boost?)

Or the VGT Servo, moves freely tho key off.

Or the atmospheric turbo has shit the bed.

Time to get cracking I guess.
 
Search for the issues.....

EBP pulled, clean.
MAF cleaned.
MAP pulled, dirty, cleaned and reinstalled.

No changes.

Boost leak tester made, need bigger compressor, would only hold pressure for 15 seconds or so (leaks past valves) but no major leaks found.

Next up EGR valve. Well if it wasn't the issue it is one now.... Valve broke in half. They are a tight fit in the bore and known to galvanize themselves in place.... Ford has a special tool designed, that apparently just breaks too. No amount of beating could even make it turn or budge.

Good news is I grabbed the valve plunger with vice grips and pulled it closed and it seems to run a bit better, still a little smokey but better. So go to pull the whole intake elbow off that houses the EGR valve so I can attack it from the inside too. And the last bolt strips..... Wish me luck. Of course its the one you cant reach..... New elbow ordered.
 
The snorkel will definitely make a huge difference in your air cleaner hygiene. When we added them to our cars in Dubai we went from having to clean the air filters every trip (on bad days we cleaned multiple times during a trip when we would start to lose rpm) to cleaning them every 30-40 trips as a precaution with no noticeable impact on performance. This also allowed us to get better to much better factory filters and ditch the engine eating K&N's.
 
May want to consider a Donaldson precleaner as well. Helped me in convoys. 5 trucks last weekend and dumped a bit of sand out of it Sunday when I got home.

Took the truck for a longer highway drive. Its back to being great again!

Its been a long time since I did Excel..... But Logs: EBP vs RPM is Grey, EGT (well EGT/100 as it throws the values way huge vs everything else anyway) vs RPM is Orange, and Boost is Blue.

And a snippet of the data if thats more helpful, roll from a stop. Accelerator Position (A), EGT (B), Boost (D), EBP (E) and RPM (F) as well as VGT because its interesting.

Yeah, luckily no damage to the rotor itself, just the dust shield. And the box can be pushed back out.... Such is life stuffing big ass truck little places it seems.
