I HATE PORTABLE FRIDGES!

I use a 55qt Canyon Cooler, its been great.

Looks like that cooler MSRP's about $40 more than my first fridge. I believe its Danfoss Compressor is still humming away with its 5th owner now. Not to poke holes in your system, since the cooler works for you and all, but there's nothing too fancy about a fridge.

In addition to my 47 L ARB fridge which stays in the truck full time, I picked up a cooler to augment my available chilled-stuff capacity. Yes, pundits, there is a place for these contraptions you call "coolers" or "ice chests."

Pelican 28 L Elite Cooler. Latches are much easier to operate than the super secure knuckle-buster latches of other product lines, Pelican Lifetime warranty, and my experience with other stupid-durable Pelican products.

If you are referring to the Waeco that I purchased from you and ran for over 2 years 24/7, yes it is still running and has been sold to @Big Dave . I was so happy with the way it ran that I picked up a Dometic 65DZ and that is what I am currently running

That's the one. I ran it for probably 3-4 years myself and I was the 3rd owner. My only worry with it ever was freezing stuff that I didn't mean to with that sliding rheostat for the temp. If a replacement latch and a good appropriately sized slide had been available for fitment in the Flippac, I'd probably be running it still. The sale offset the cost allowing me to sell Heidi on our current Engel.

msrp, how many years ago?

Accounting for the space ice takes up a 35qt waeco looks to be ~$600 ($500 for the cfx-35) in 2016, the same year I bought my cooler. I think a fridge could definitely benefit my situation, but cost doesn't sound worth it to me as of now. I also know if I got one, id want drawer and slide and to properly wire it in to be happy with it. I hands down think a fridge is > than cooler, no argument there.

It is the holy grail of creature comfort in my eyes. In my maslow's heirarchy of overlanding needs I've not reached refrigerator level yet.

That cooler runs about $290. I found my fridge used for $250 when I bought it. Strapped it down behind the passenger seat of my Tacoma plugged it into a power port. Haven't purchased a bag of ice or frozen a water bottle since 2008.

Cool. The 18 quart one? also, I think its inconsistent to compare pricing to one new item to one used item.

Sure, if you put no value in used items. 10 years since new, it's still working fine. It was a 35 quart (CDF-35).

This is the post i misunderstood, I thought you meant you bought a 35qt fridge brand new that could be had today for $290(you didnt initially say you got it used)...since you compared its price to the MSRP of a new cooler in 2016... Not to the price of a used rotomolded cooler in the year you purchased. But after the other posts I now understand that you were referring to an item you bought used years ago and taking that price & comparing it to the price of something new today. GOT IT. And of course used items have value or else I would never have bought a 17yo vehicle :)

I understand the confusion, I thought I had initially said I was the third owner, but I guess I hadn't. That's my fault. In the end, my point is, don't deny yourself a fridge just because it seems overly fancy. I used that beat up Waeco complete with a strap around it to keep it closed for years. It provided nothing but smiles... except the time I froze a beer while on the trail and made it explode. That wasn't so nice. :)

I loved my Engel that I had in my Jeep. It never let me down and was a smile dispenser both on and off the trail.. I used it daily whether transporting food from the grocery store, my lunch to work, meals on camping trip for myself and the neighbors or dispensing bottles of cold water to young whipper snappers after a PFT or CFT on a hot day. Oh, and at any tailgating event it blows people's minds whilst employing the smile and nod method.

The National Luna in the Land Cruiser has kept that legacy rolling on. The separate freezer is a neat feature. Having ice cubes at the ready (or chilled whiskey stones) is a welcomed luxury as are ice cream treats. Also a great place to store ice packs for medical emergencies.

To put it in perspective for the most miserly miser; a top of the line fridge is a lot less expensive than having an ARB (or equivalent) locker installed and I'm pretty dang sure that it will be used more than any locker ever will. I had front and rear lockers in the Jeep... only used them to function check them and once to climb a very steep scree covered hill which was to test the capability of the lockers, completely unnecessary. The Land Cruiser is full time 4WD with the ability to be triple locked. Haven't needed those either (knock on wood). Will a fridge get you unstuck or keep you from getting stuck? Probably not but it will keep everyone involved with a recovery supplied with cold beverages and Sammiches!
