A new beginning?

Incidentals are starting to add up.

New sheets $100+...the new bed is what I refer to as an RV "king size bed", in actual dimensions it's 4" short on the width and 6" short on length compared to a residential king size bed. Custom sheets, or...a helpful hint form the RV forum, men's suspenders from Walmart to use under the mattress to keep the fitted sheet tight on the mattress (THAT little tidbit of info would have helped in boot camp so many years ago)! Oh yeah, new bed, new sheets, obviously required new pillows, add another $70.

New kitchen obviously requires new dinnerware (duh!), silverware and some pots/pans that all match, (why didn't I think of that?), oh and don't forget the new glass ware, stackable glasses to reduce cabinet space, $300 covered that tab on the interweb.

Figure we'll need a throw rug for the living room, possibly a runner rug for the hallway (really hon', that's a hallway?) for the front door, bathroom, bedroom interface area, $250-300 for both.

Machelle steams my uniforms when they come out of the wash, $50 for a new hand held steamer, no room for the floor model she has used for years.

Speaking of wash, we're still looking/researching the washer/dryer thing...looks like $1200 +/- for a stackable set, or a combination in one machine. Whichever we decide on, all of the research indicates we should count on 1.5+ HOUR to get clothes dry. I had a 110/120V dryer given to me back in the '80's...a fan and a hair dryer would have been faster...doesn't seem that much has changed. For just the two of us we can make it work...if we have the grandchillen', they may learn Grandpa Bob's 4 day chonie cycle!

Machelle is making use of the vacuum storage bags for off season clothes. We got a stick style vacuum from our daughter, no hose connection on it...add $85 for a DeWalt 18v cordless vacuum. I already have an assortment of DeWalt 18v tools, so I didn't have to buy a battery/charger.

We are rapidly burning through our slush funds!

We're getting down to the brass tacks, we are supposed to take delivery on Wednesday!

The junk drawdown is still in full effect at the house. I realized yesterday that I don't have any where to put my books. Even when whittled down to travel related almanacs, maps, guide books, first aid manuals, survival manuals, there are NO open shelves in the trailer. It has (seemingly) plenty of small cabinets, hopefully I can commandeer one of those from Machelle!

We wanted to do another walk through last weekend, that didn't happen. I figured that asking to do it on a weekend would be a tough nut. My sales guy wasn't even sure which one of their yards the trailer was at. My biggest concern is finding something that needs to be fixed, and getting it done before move in day on Saturday.

The current plan is pick up on Wednesday, park it in front of my house until Saturday so that we can shift stuff that we are keeping from the house to the trailer on Thursday/Friday, then move to our campground on Saturday.

Thanks @woody, I think I have my bases covered.

We dickered with the sales guys, getting the washer and a vented dryer unit with install for $800. The vent has to be cut into the side of the trailer, but the vented dryers are supposed to work better than the condensing style (ventless) dryer.

I must admit that I was a little leery about cutting a dryer vent size hole in the side of the trailer...I guess it had to be done.

Good luck today. I have no idea how I would condense my life down to live in a travel trailer full time.

Todays theme song will be "Off we go into the wild blue yonder" There is no doubt in my mind you and Machelle will do just fine on you new adventure.

Today went HORRIBLY wrong...

The "service manager" Scott, called Machelle and told her the trailer would be ready to go on Tuesday (yesterday), she said great, we'll be there Wednesday around noon. We get there today at 1230. I text my guy, tell him we are there, he's a little stunned, says we aren't supposed to be there until 3PM. No big deal, we've waited a couple of weeks, another 45 minutes isn't going to kill us...turns into an hour and a half, we can see "finance", get the remaining paperwork done while the trailer is being detailed.

An hour or so later the walk through/orientation guy comes and gets us, takes us out to the trailer. I knew it was not going to go well right from the jump...handrail for the entrance door is still loose, door still binds a bit, have to tug to open it, slam it to close it. As soon as we walk in, I see another problem, one of the hanging lamps over the kitchen island is literally falling apart, the other one is missing the shade. It get's worse...my $2500 auto level jack system is inoperative, I know more about the system than their "best" tech, the black trim moldings on the interior have overly apparent sand marks every single place there was a nail in the trim (no idea how they are going to fix that), trim strips on the roof are literally falling off...and the list goes on.

I had to get Machelle out of there before she went completely off the handle.

We'll see how it goes from here.

I did too, Dave, I did too.

Machelle is disappointed beyond belief, I have to admit I'm pretty bent out of shape about the situation as well. Everyone that I dealt with at the dealership knew what our plans were.

I sent an e-mail to the service manager this morning asking him to call me as soon as possible. I think I may take a look at some other options as well.

Sounds like it's time to go above the service manager. Horrible to hear about your issues. Not right for a brand new trailer. Not to scare you, but how financially healthy is La Mesa RV? Not too long ago there were horror stories about a huge RV dealer (name escapes me) up here in the LA area that was crapping out on all their sales 'promises' and warranty/post sale service was not-existent! Sounded like it was basically, move the unit off the lot to get credit for the sale and then they disappeared. I think they went out of business.

I hope you do better. Do not take delivery until you are happy, but sounds like timing isn't good for you. Good Luck!

Well that sucks big time. Your experience is pretty much 100% typical of RV dealers. And 100% typical of what I read everywhere.

Another person I know is currently doing the back and forth trying to get things fixed, getting screwed, not getting things fixed right. To quote myself in that thread...

Hate to be a Debbie downer.

RV dealers are incompetent. And you shouldn't trust them to ever fix this correctly. I know you want it fixed properly, but if you want that done, you're better off cutting them out and doing it yourself.

After I said that, his problem has only continued to get worse with the dealership. Just like you, they bought for retirement and are trying to enjoy their new trailer. Been going back and forth for a month.

Here is the truth about the RV industry. Everything is built like garbage. Just because it's made in the US doesn't mean it's not a turd on wheels. And worse, the dealerships are incompetent. They hire minimum wage people to fix your problems. People who don't care about your problems. Honestly, the RV industry makes the government look competent.

I wish I had something positive to add here. Other than, I'll pour ya a beer and I feel your pain. Screw those guys.

I'm well aware of the RV industry, when I worked for Allison Transmission I saw the build quality on everything from gas engines to $1,000,000+ diesel pushers.

LaMesa RV has several stores in the west, they have been around for years, don't expect them to be closing their doors any time soon.

The service manager did call me first thing this morning, and my sales guy did as well.

My case has been escalated to the General Manager, or so I've been told. I'll be back down there this afternoon to see what progress has been made. I figured I'd give them another day to try to make things right before I start raising hell.

With the number of cosmetic and other flaws you found it seems like they ought to be sourcing you another NEW unit ASAP!
