Watches!

I'm more into field style watches, as they're simpler and tend to fit my wrist better, but I had been thinking about a watch with a bezel. I'm not a diver, but the compass bezels somewhat appeal to me (reminds me of my dad's lesson on discerning direction via an analog watch). In looking around at the different bezel styles, I came across this article on how to read/use watch bezels: http://gearpatrol.com/2014/02/04/timekeeping-101-read-bezel/ I found it enlightening... slide rule anyone?

You might need to replace the strap though... smell it after a camp trip, or even a day of work. I have no idea what the liner is made from, but it sure isn't leather and it sure doesn't wick away moisture!

That's disappointing. I liked the look of that band.

I do not care really for the thickness or the silver holes in the band. It looks good in pics, but I do not like the way it fits my wrist. I have ordered 2 different NATO style bands,by Maratac, should be in on Monday.

Since we are talking watches, I thought I would share a recent experience. I bought a new pocket watch on E-Bay. I did not realize that the seller was from the Ukraine until I had paid. Knowing that this country is currently war torn, I thought that I would probably never see the watch. Much to my surprise, it arrived a week or two later. I thanked the seller and expressed my concern and best wishes for their safety. following is my comment and to my surprise, their reply. Their response really struck me and reminded me how blessed we are to live free in this Country.

Received the watch today, and I thank you very much! Our news is filled with the war, terrorist activities and unrest in your country, I hope that you are safe where you are at and that it does not come to your city. Respectfully: Marc Stauffer

Hello, Mark.
Thanks for the letter. We are very glad that you received a parcel. I hope that this pocket watch will serve you long. And to please you. Thank you that to you our destiny isn't indifferent. And destiny of our distressful Ukraine. I and my wife we are representatives of our simple people. We are Ukrainians. Ukrainians are , beautiful and with beautiful Ukrainian songs the people. At you in the USA it is simpler. You are citizens of your Great country. Our neighbor Russia which very much doesn't love Ukraine is. The mass media it within decades and brainwashes them. Also does of us enemies of Russia. And now Russia launched war against Ukraine and its people. Which wanted to live according to the European standards. We hope that by means of all civilized world, Ukraine will cope with this problem. I write shortly. I will try to translate into English now.

.

Thank you for sharing that! What a heartrending reply... the writer draws a parallel between him and his fellow countrymen and what could be said of you (we) and your (our) neighbors.

I don't mean to politicize this thread or your post, but it reminds me why we can't take our liberty and freedom for granted. Imagine having a neighboring country that has you completely surrounded with overwhelming military capacity, an irresistible juggernaut that could dominate your meager, poorly equipped defenses and return your country to the totalitarian regime that your country struggled for freedom from over the course of decades. Imagine having a neighboring country that controls every commodity that fuels your economy who can turn it on or off at their will. Imagine being held hostage in your own home. His only hope... that the free world will help to intervene - to influence or stand up to the bully.

I've had the opportunity to meet and live among different cultures from around the world and one thing I found remarkable is that most all of them weren't too terribly different from you and me. That includes the Muslim world. They wanted the same freedom and security for themselves and their families just like us, and knowing that and seeing the reply you shared arouses deep sympathy from me for their plight.

This is one of the most important posts that I've seen here. This is a post to remind us , despite all the warts, that what we have as Americans should be cherished.

Great posts. Living abroad was one of the defining experiences of my life. I believe its helped me to see the good in people, regardless of what the puppetmasters want us to think.

Looking to sell all the watches I don't use which is all my citizen watches. If your interested in one let me know.

I love me some watches. Here are a couple of mine:

The one on the right is a titanium Dakota I purchased over ten years ago and on the left is a Rolex passed down from my late grandfather. My father told me it died the day my grandfather passed. He wore it everyday for over 30 years! :wow The repairs are almost as expensive as purchasing a similar new one, but with the sentimental value and all, I will eventually send it off for repair.

I couldn't agree more on the Rolex. My mother handed me my fathers stainless steel Rolex after he passed away 25 years ago. Had it cleaned way back then for $250. It' up to $600 for a good proper Rolex cleaning now. I still do that about every 5 years. Its got more sentimental value than value and it'll get passed on to my son some day.
