SomedayAdventure's "Polar Bear" Build Thread

The Polar Bear

I would like to formally introduce our newest addition to the Someday I'll Learn family...the hastily named ...Polar Bear.:D
20150729_120238.jpg

We actually purchased it at the exact same dealership. We used the 2004 F150 (200k miles) as a trade in and left with the new, matching, more powerful F350.
20150726_201851.jpg

More powerful? Yes...more powerful. The Bear holds itself at a stock 400hp and 800ft/lbs of torque. The Polar Bear, being a 2015 model, holds itself at stock as 440hp and 860ft/lbs of torque. A bit of a gain. Were looking forward to seeing how it does post lift and wheels (currents are roughly 34.5" tires on 20" wheels).

First dual pose.
20150812_145133.jpg

Ever since he came home...the Bear and Polar Bear have been almost inseparable.
IMG_20150812_161811.jpg

They even keep posing together for all these cell phone selfies.

Now, jumping right into it. As pragmatists, we like to address function first. The most obvious area we planned to upgrade was the bed of the truck. We like to throw things in them and it just wouldn't make any sense to get scratches or other unwanted and avoidable marks and scuffs if we could help it. So.
Stop #1
20150813_085235.jpg

Off to Line-X. I don't remember why exactly but we chose Line-X to be our bed liner of choice. This time, unlike The Bear, we went for the premium long lasting option on the bed spray. The Bear hasn't actually had any issue and the worst I'm told it will get is a dark charcoal...and that matches my truck soooo...who cares.

20150813_114443.jpg

We wound up waiting about five (5) hours in Escondido for the Line-X to get finished. Long wait but the final product looks great. Now to see if the shine really does last in the sun.

Stop #2

The second thing we had done to the truck within about two weeks of taking the keys is tint. Not much to say about this except we took it to Alvin O's in Kerney Mesa (just like the rest of our cars/trucks). He strongly recommended just matching the tint in the front to the factory smoked glass in the back after I asked with the Bear to go dark as possible.

Two of the first upgrades made. So many to go...

Is this an additional vehicle, or something a family member will drive? Looks awesome. I love the new Ford look, but after the debacle of the 6.0, and the price tags on ALL new trucks.. I think I'll keep my trust 04 dodge ram 5.9 cummins a whole longer. Can't wait to see updates. I've always loved white trucks.

looks like quite the start, now you just need a Mercenary bumper and 42" super swampers :D

on a serious note, what is the long term plan for the new rig?

Love the white truck. What color interior?

The interior is tan sir...tan comfortable intoxicating leather

This is my father's new truck. He and my mother bought it so they can do a cooperative build along with mine. So, as mine is not done yet, theirs will progress to essentially the same end point along with their trailer build (which my father and I will be doing).

And last but not least.
I like your bumper but mine, as my dad already likes it, has really started to prove itself. Last night, a rather intoxicated gentleman backed his Mercedes suv into my truck. Game results...The Bear 1, Mercedes 0. I mean, I will have to get his paint off my bumper in the future but it was nice to know no damage at all.

So, the list:

Line X- Done
Tint- Done

Buckstop Bumper- Boss in chrome

Warn Winch (M12 or M15...I have the M12000)

Rigid Industry lights (two 10" diffused to face out to the side******)

Rigid Industry lights (2x6 Rock light kit white from truck to trailer)

37x12.5 (17 or 20" wheels. I'm telling my dad to go 17 but could use imperical evidence as he "likes the way the 20"s look that came with it arg)

Carli Dominator 3" 4.5 (well see where this pans out as far as timing)

Snug Top Xtra Vision truck cap (with roof rack/Basket and Tire Mount and vented windoors******)

Timbren Industries rear bump stops
http://timbren.com/ **you might recognize the truck on the website ;)

##Radio System for coms (possibly 2 years out from trip through Yukon with both trucks)
##Power suply and retention for camp sites etc

******Both trucks are most likely going to be going to Carli. I've chosen the Dominator 3" sytem with 4.5" lift (unless I talk to them and can keep the 6 or something). I'm pretty sure my father is either going the same or the coil over system.

******The 10" Rigid Lights to face out to the side. While at Overland Expo, I spoke with a guy in a gold Tacoma (forgot his name sorry, but he was parked next to Sean Jennings aka Defconbrix at the Rigid tent) and we talked about using the Rigid lights for our children. He had some mounted under his roof rack that faced out 90 degrees so his kids could see the scenery at night while they drove offroad. Scenery and view for the kids along with additional turn visibility for me. Last year I drove on some dirt roads in god knows where with some drop offs to the side and no idea what was there. Just hoped looking straight ahead was good enough.

This is the start of the list so far. I guess I'll copy it later and add it to the start of both my/our build threads.

I'll be looking for advise and pointers/suggestions in the future for other ideas.

Patience Is Virtue: Polar Bear waiting....

It feels like this is taking forever. Getting this truck up and going, as far as a build is concerned, is going about as fast as fresh orange blossom honey in January on an Alaskan porch. What's the hold up? What's the deal? Where's it going?
DSC_3130.jpg

Well, much to my chagrin, Method does not produce wheels very fast. NO! They take their sweet ass time. We're waiting for Method to ship out a 17x9 standard in chrome (or machined) with a -12 offset. We're picking them up from Off Road Warehouse in Escondido. They're the same shop that does most of my more complex installs (the ones that require warranties). They said, "Well, we can get you 17x8.5s like right away. Want those? They're basically the same." Um...NO. I want what I want. Stupid Method. Se La Vie.
Standard Chrome.jpg

But, the Polar Bear still has road spirit. I thought I would give you a cockpit view of what she looks like. At the helm is my father and Polar Bear operator. There are a number of differences between the Bear and the Polar Bear's interior.
DSC_3135.jpg

The PB has a tan interior. Well, duh. Also, it has a center console up front rather than a third seat. Plus side-more comfortable and permanent arm rest set up. Also, AC is shot out the back of the center console for the rear passengers to help keep them warm/cool. HOWEVER! The PB does NOT have heated rear seats like the Bear.

And while the PB does boast an additional 40hp and 60fp of torque off the lot, it was an oversight when we did not get it with the upfitter switches that came withe the Bear. This is only a small problem as we would have needed more than the 4 switches Ford provides with the upfitter package for...well, what we have planned. Our possible solution might be with Switch Pros.

Either way...the danes love their truck as it is. As long as they get invited along that is.

Ok. The lift is on.

We're a little irritated that off-road warehouse forgot to level it. The front is just a hair higher. Also, they ordered the fox reservoir shocks...but forgot the adjustable reservoirs.

In the end it'll get done on the 21st I guess

I'm trying to think of something funny to say about a truck thats so BIG it takes up two whole bays at the Shell station!

GULP! [emoji106]

So, we discovered the sway bar wasn't bolted back into place this morning.

Quick fix. Dumb mistake but quick fix.

Then, on to a small test run.
Down to 30psi on the BF Goodrich 37x12.5 17s

Then we dialed down the Fox adjustable reservoir shock to what I like to call "squishy"

Then off down the road

It was a pretty good day.

Of course...we're still waiting on a shipment...a very heavy, custom and one of a kind indestructible shipment [emoji12]

Ok. So here's the story.
68a8b1c4e2dc7f725c004ec6bffa0d86.jpg

My dad has always wanted a Ford diesel. I got mine and started an internal timer run on competitive spirit and adrenaline (naturally occurring elements in our family). Eventually, his time came (my mom said ok).

The Day family fleet is born.

He destroyed me on the suspension. Honestly, bravo. Great place to put $ and energy. Really.

As a son loves his father (as much as two men addicted to competition and violence could), I wanted to help him out and keep things moving. I knew he loved my Buckstop Truckware bumper but had mentioned it magically being chrome.

Well, BOOM dad!!! No chrome for you.

Today, I spent 10 hours driving my dad around San Diego county on pretend errands while my mom dropped off the truck to get worked on.

Things went in

List of changes to follow...

So...this is not chrome. This is 1/4" thick polished (8 hours or so) solid stainless steel. Polished like a katana.

Inside the bumper is an M12000 Warn winch to assist in possibly removing the truck from a sticky situation.

Also located inside the bumper are some very special lights. The fog lights were replaced with Baja Designs squadron pro sports. In the center are two XL80s with spot flood combo.

For control, we put in Switch Pros system.

Still not sure where to mount it though

Now that's BLING! A work of art, giant jewelry!
How do you get it under the tree tomorrow night?

A couple new shots.

By the way. The BDS system is AMAZING. Why? I never though it would feel so good to jump a 7500 lb truck. Yes. We did that. I landed, after floating, ...well, it's hard to describe. It was kind of like falling in bed after a long day at work. If that makes sense.

The BEAR will be getting this same kit now. HOLY HELL. I'll talk more about it later. By the way...I also spoke with BDS last night and found out what "BDS" stands for. I just laughed out loud.
