September Monthly AAV SoCal Trail Run - Saturday Sunday overnight

Location: Big Bear – Gold Mountain, Jacoby Canyon and Little Holcomb Creek
When: September 24th-25th
Duration: Overnight Campout

Difficulty:2-5 (Scale of 1-10)
Organizer(s):Brett (IronworksTactical)
Trail Boss(s): Brett

Meet Location and Time:Big Bear Discovery Center– Top of parking lot @ 0900, we will conduct a driver meeting at 0930 and then head out.

Route: We will take 3N69 Gold Mountain (TR:4-5) to 3N61 Jacoby Canyon (TR:3-5), from there we will take the Highway back past Lake Baldwin back into Big Bear where we will take 3N09 Van Drusen (TR: 1-) to 3N16 Holcomb Valley (TR:2-4) to our last small trail, 3N08 Holcomb Creek Road (TR:4-5) where we can finish it off.

We will plan on camping in Holcomb Valley that night after the trail run off of 3N07. Campfires will probably still not be allowed but we will play that by ear.

TR = Trail Rating (explanation)

Alternate ending: Dinner in camp or we can all head down into Big Bear for some burgers or pizza after the run before camping.

Planned Camp Discussion: During dinner we will do a small discussion type class on picking lines, tire placement and throttle control for more difficult trails. I can tailor the discussion to the group after the day of wheeling. Most of us drive overland type vehicles but these skills are very important to have because there is nothing worse than trying out for the first time or honing an old rusty skill when you have no back up.

Rig Requirements:
4x4
Rear Lockers
Front and rear recovery points
2" lift
Suggested vehicle mods (not required):
Sliders
Front traction control (i.e. limited slip locker or air locker)

Communication: HAM 146.460

Depending on WHO signs up I will be keeping this list for now to 10. If anyone is intimately knowledgeable of these areas please step up so you can assist me in running this. It would be greatly appreciated.

Throw me in the mix Brett for I am trail hungry. Last time I tried Gold Mountain was winter -ish and it was slippery and jacked up going up the trail. We never made it up.

I've got open diff so this may be interesting depending on terrain.

I had a guy behind me with the intent to use me as an anchor point because he had open diffs and street tires. He didn't have any issues while some of the guys who were locked on 33s did. Granted he was in a gen 1 Tacoma that he originally bought. The guy just knew how to drive properly.

Brett put us down for the run. I may have the weekend off and the kids would love it.

We (locked 80 series and unlocked 100 series) ran Gold Mountain at MRV and I'll confirm the requirements. At one point the 100 got hung up on the sliders and needed a tug backwards. However after some trailer repair the 100 made it:D We did not run any of the other trails listed.

Golds the harder of the 3. So if you ran it you're fine on the other two. Putting you down and glad to have you.

It's my buddy Andy's birthday this weekend and he wants to go Jeepin'! These are some good trails. I'll confirm, but he's on his honeymoon until Monday. It would be myself and two other rigs. Potentially a third rig (4 total). I'm still unsure if he wants to go to Big Bear or elsewhere, but we can always be a second group since we'd be a couple vehicles. Subscribed!

Let me know. We currently have room for 5. We can make it work. Whether two groups as you spoke of them a nice group camp afterwards or something.

Looking forward to this trip, now I just need to make the truck start... First the ignition switch broke in half when I was unplugging it, then I found that the "ignition actuator rod" had broken in half. Unfortunately you have to take apart the whole column to replace the actuator rod. Thanks Ford, 2 hours of work to replace a $10 part.

I need to find out why my onboard air compressor stopped pumping halfway through a tire. It hums/vibrates, but no air comes out. I'll be troubleshooting this weekend.

What kind of compressor is it?
May have blown a seal?
