REI was accused of being vehiclular friendly on another forum. I found this on REI's site...http://www.rei.com/stewardship/community.html... scroll through the list of groups they support and check off the vehicular groups they support if you ever have any doubts about how they feel about vehiclular travel off highway.

Throw the name of the other forum out there, or even better, post the link. ANYONE who thinks Rei supports what we do needs to be educated.

For the benefit of the Admins/Moderators, I'm not going to start a Forum war, that is counterproductive to all involved.

I think the list on the REI website sums it up pretty well.

REI supports causes that often find themselves at odds with the off pavement vehicular community. I have reduced the amount of business that I give them as a result. That's how it should be... Vote on companies with your dollars.

Well that was interesting!
Personally I've never spent much time or consequently much money at REI. Good for me.

For some strange reason I throw-up in my mouth a little bit when I see any group named "Friends of...", or one that starts with the city name...The Santa Barbara one-eyed, left-handed snail darter coalition. Oh well?

Friends of the Rubicon is an outstanding organization, they fight hard to keep the Rubicon open specifically, and El Dorado National Forest in general, open to off highway activity.

So it's really impossible to have both? I obviously support vehicle-dependent exploration; I own four four-wheel-drive vehicles at the moment. I also support wilderness and think we could use more of it. So am I evil? Uneducated?

There are strident, selfish, ignorant people on both ends of the land use issue. I have no more use for the vegan Prius driver who thinks his lifestyle is innocent of collateral damage than I do for the mouthbreather in the jacked-up truck who thinks it's cute to 'roll coal' over a bicyclist. The world - and our public lands - would be better off without both of them.

My biggest issue is land closure, CLOSURE IS NOT MANAGEMENT! I dare say that 99% of us on this forum are environmentalists. I have no interest in driving through a junk yard when I'm off highway. In my experience there is little room in the Sierra Club or the Center for Biological Diversity for those of us in off highway vehicles. I experienced this again just last weekend. A group of us were on a GRADED road going up to a lookout point. This road had been closed for a period of time to vehicles, but remained open to hikers. It has recently been opened to the off highway community again. Virtually EVERY hiker I encountered on our trip up/down the hill scowled at us as we went by. I know for a fact that my group slowed down to reduce dust and crept by them. I always ask hikers if they need a cold water or if I can haul any trash they might be carrying. Not ONCE, EVER, here or Colorado has a hiker taken me up on the offer.

Johnathan, I don't think it's impossible to have both, but I REFUSE to support an organization that so boldly supports other organizations that are hell bent on closing public lands to vehicular travel, like the sierra club. I'm pretty sure John Muir is rolling in his grave, seeing what Sierra club has become.

I am so screwed on so many levels...

I drive a Prius...

I drive a tall truck on 35" tires...

But the good news is I'm Roman Catholic and not Vegan.

This post makes my brain hurt. A prius???? Does it have an "I sierra club" license plate frame?

My truck lives on a diet of poached Prius, with a sprinkling of processed flora from the Jurassic period.

When I saw this, I lost my lunch. At least we'll know when to find another ramp if needed...this was my screen saver for so many years...

I'll agree with Jonathon on the "rolling coal" thing, I don't get that either. No matter the issue, it's the extreme opposing ends that get all the attention, those of us in the middle just trying to do the right thing (for any particular situation) are the one's that have to live with the results. Center for Biological Diversity still has their chonies in a wad over the Imperial Sand Dunes (Glamis). They kept trying to shut Glamis down because of a weed called Thompson's Milk Vetch. Only grows in the dunes. CoBD succeeded in getting a portion of the dunes closed...turns out the weed grew BETTER on the side where motorized access (buggies, quads, bikes) retained access than it did in the CLOSED area.

The off highway community as a whole has got to be self disciplined. If you see some asshat destroying the land, make an attempt to educate the SOB that just may have been raised wrong and doesn't get it. Now, I'm not saying you approach a bunch of drunks with weapons taking pot shots at a sign, there needs to be some common sense involved with dealing with stupid people. Never let a stupid person bring you down to their level, they'll win every time because they are more experienced:dunno Jotting down a couple of plate numbers and a discreet pic of the culprits and their vehicles turned over to the proper authorities may make an impression on them. I hate a "rat" as much as the next guy, but there are times when that is the only option to overcome said stupid people.

I'm waiting to see a Prius with an NRA life member sticker on it. I will stop whoever it is and buy him or her lunch.

I'm about to sign papers on a Subaru Outback today so I guess I'm as conflicted as Tim.

"Rolling coal" is dumb. So is hypocrisy. Last time we were camped at Darwin Falls a group of folks showed up in a 4x4 Suburban, a couple 4Runners and a Ford pickup. The group got out with clipboards and started counting koi fish in the pond and tested the waters, taking pictures etc. A group of about 12-15 folks walking RIGHT through our camp (Mike and Trump were there), they did not say so much as a word to us but the snarky looks said enough. One of the weirdest and rudest displays I've seen in the back country.

I asked, nicely, who they were and what they were up to and they said they were from the Sierra Club and gathering data to "protect" Darwin Falls and the koi fish pond there from campers and off roaders.

So they were there, in 4x4's, no different than us but the message was "we" should be shut out. Needless to say, my first and only interaction with the Sierra Club was a very negative first impression. Hypocrisy and arrogance surrounded them.

Be careful, if you Stop them they may shoot at you...I have nothing against Prius owners, just the car itself, which is I believe an oxymoron. Sure it gets great mileage and can run on electricity, but what about the footprint the goes into making the batteries or for that matter disposing the non recyclable batteries. What about the power used to generate for them to use. Wether it's coal or nuclear. In my opinion there is no better car.

Just to stir the pot a bit I don't see it as being screwed or conflicted. It's OK to have a more economical vehicle if one chooses just as it's ok to have a 4 or 500 HP vehicle. What I have issue with is being told I can't have my choice of either by some idiot that doesn't pay my bills and thinks they know what is best for me. We get enough of that from the Gov. I further believe light hearted comments in jest go along way towards a more civil interaction as a opposed to tar and feathers. Maybe ,maybe not? :dunno

Thanks for posting Bob, I think the discussion should just be limited to trying to well Keep Public Lands... Public Folks, be aware that, the Sierra Club,Center for Biological Diversity, and ARE VERY ACTIVELY trying to "leave US OUT" of public lands The new BLM west mojave ( WEMO) plan seems to be eliminating many miles miles of trails. From Friends of Jawbone Canyon..
