Propane fire pit

Look what FedEx brought me.

The ceramic "logs" look like a massive pile of faux poo. If you have OBA and a blow-gun attachment its a great way to clean the soot off before packing away after use.

Brining this back up.. I put the idea of the propane fire pit in the back burner. This weekend the wife, 2 kids and I came down to visit my parents who are staying in their 40 foot diesel pusher down here for a month. We are all hanging around my dad's outland firebowl. Just hanging around it had put it on the top of my list to buy within the next week. Works awesome.

How was it on fuel consumption? We already use a buddy heater in the tent, with the big bottle adapter (which burns roughly 2lbs a night when on high).

I just bought a Camp Chef fire pit. Although I've only had about 20 minutes to play around with it, before leaving for Orlando. It does put out some heat. I've got it hooked up to a 5lb bottle. When I get back I'll do some testing to note it's fuel consumption. I want to know before we head out to the woods.

I think it ran me around $100 shipped, maybe a little less.

I've talked to my dad for a little bit about it. They run a 20lb tank on it and get 4 days or so with it running 3 hours a night... So it's a propane hog... But it is oh so nice.

That's good info to know.

∆∆∆ When cut open and modified, those make great meat smokers. Best when mounted on a trailer and brought to an overlanding event, like DRV.

I'm a big fan of the Volcano stove. I've used it with the propane burner during high fire season and also used it with charcoal and wood, it works great and packs pretty compact into a 8-12" thick by 14-16" wide cylinder.

There was this GREAT idea on Kickstarter a few years ago called "Campfire in a Can". Well, myself and hundreds of others are all out 179 bucks each. The guy took the money and ran. There are no promises on Kickstarter. Be warned. I have backed dozens of items. Only one I had problems with. Oh well. Time to look at the Volcano stove I guess.

Some people must have got them, a guy had one a few months ago at the rendezvous. I just got the little red campfire, order one for my FIL too. Home Depot, $250 total for 2 shipped to my door. Same thing really.

This was the one I was talking about: https://www.kickstarter.com/project...mazing-campfire-in-a-can-at-last-a-2-in-1-cam

They were more than funded and then bailed. I thought it was a great idea because you could burn charcoal , propane and wood. Wish this would of came to fruition.

I'm sure I've seen one of those somewhere along the line, one of the Rendezvous events would be my best guess. It seems their website is up and running, I'm border line stupid on a computer though.

No idea how the Kickstarter thing works if they bail on you.

That is different than what he called the same name, what they had was almost identical to the little red campfire. Hate you got screwed, looked like a cool product, also looks like they got more than enough money to deliver the goods too.

Aren't they obligated to refund everyone's money if they don't release the product?

Nope. This is one of the negatives to Kickstarter... just like being an angel investor, it's risky. I've had a couple flame on me. One claimed they're still working on the product but it's been two years now.

It's one of the reasons they call them "rewards" now - you're rewarded by the products being delivered if they are successful.

Well, that's a bunch of malarkey!

I have an idea for one, but don't have the time or place to build a prototype. Remember the folding plastic drinking cups from your childhood? I was thinking one could build one similar to that with the burner ring in the bottom section. The concentric rings would allow it to collapse, 4 legs would lock in place with set screws, and slide down in the collapsed position, so they could center it up on a fear mounted spare tire. If someone takes this and runs with it, all I ask is you cut me a deal on one if you make one. I do have a few drawings I've made. Collapsed it would be about 32" in diameter, and about 3" thick.
