Of Whoopie Slings and Tarp Worms..Hammock Camping Discussion

Recent road trip cross-country. On I-20 headed west in Texas and really needed a nap about 2 am.

Hammock in the trees at a rest area :thumbsup

An asymmetric hammock has the best laying position. Tarps can be had fairly cheaply on Amazon, we’ve had good luck with the Chill Gorilla brand on Michelle’s set up and saved a significant amount over buying a higher end tarp. There are a bunch of brands to chose from as well. My Warbonnet tarp packs smaller and easier though and is lighter.

I’d buy a good quality hammock and pair it with a more basic tarp, underquilt or pad. If you like the hammock you can upgrade the accessories as you go along. Buying a hammock that you can’t get comfortable in, as in the banana position, will have you writing off hammocks right from the get go as well as not having insulation even on a warm night.

My Warbonnet zips to the hammock.. I'll bring it next time I'm over and you can try it out... I'll bring the cheaper style hammocks too so you can see the difference. And a pad or underquilt is a must, air will suck the heat right out from under you in a hammock. A blanket may be enough in warm weather, but your bodyweight crushes the loft of anything inside the hammock, that's why you have to hang something under(or a pad) for cool/cold weather.

The Eno bug net works good. It goes over the whole hammock and has a center zipper for getting in and out. It has closures on both ends to go around the end of the hammock

I would have thought you would wind up using it in FL. I am quite sure I would get eaten alive (ant that's a fair bit of eatin these days!) without a net.

Depends on time of year and especially location. I thought it would be “buggier” myself down here, but I’ve learned that even in the swamps where I’ve hung out that bugs are not a constant irritant.

Could be the Copenhagen and Jim Beam :dunno

Well... I tried out a gathered end double.... that did not go well. It was very uncomfortable no matter what I tried. I started looking more into the models that have spreader bars at the ends like the Warbonnet Ridgerunner https://www.warbonnetoutdoors.com/product/ridgerunner-hammock/ and the Lawson Blue Ridge https://www.amazon.com/Lawson-Hammo...&sprefix=war+bonnet+hammo,sporting,205&sr=1-7.

Then I came across the ENO Skylite https://www.enwild.com/eagles-nest-outfitters-skylite-hammock.html and went ahead and ordered. This company had them and the ENO helios suspension on sale. I will follow up with how it works out. Should be here next week.

I'll second the ENO Skylight. Comfortable, packs small and with netting attached. Couple this with Dutch Gear titanium ends and Whoopie slings and you'll be good to go.
