Jumping ship

The start of the turning of the tide for me was having a thread that I started re-titled and re-directed by a mod because it better suited his/her ideals of what the post should have been. That was actually more than a year before I just stopped showing up almost entirely. A plea to restore that thread's original title and intent fell on deaf ears.
No hi-jacking of a build thread? Interesting, off to read the rules more thoroughly.....

That is one helluva an actor (the horse, I mean).

OP topic: I never spent much time over there. I watched certain builds and kept up with happenings in SEES, but didn't really get into trouble over there. I have always been wary of the "you must get this" type of advice on any forum, but it was especially laughable on XPo.

Getting a personal invitation from Bill and gleaning the ideals of this site through the forum rules and various threads I've seen in the past couple days...I think I'll spend more time here. I don't have a problem joining another forum, I go where it feels comfortable. FWIW, I think I'm #95.

If the people that run this forum can just refrain from claiming to have been places they have never been I'll be happy. "We have visited the most remote place in the lower 48. And by 'we' I mean these other people who are physically fit enough to do it. I'll still claim to have done it though since I went halfway."

Hey Sempertoy, nice talking to ya at the In and Out Burger parking lot!

Funny, I was just driving through and saw this Land Cruiser that's fairly built up and noticed a bunch of stickers. Saw the "other forum" one and pulled up next to him, to say hi. Glad to see ya over here too. :)

Thanks for saying hi Mike, always nice to meet people in person from the forums. I'm just waiting for my American adventurist sticker to place right on top of the other ones ;) catch you at OX.

I guess I will add my 2 cents....

I have not been on ExPo a long time, only since late 2009. I found my way there via Ih8mud and somebody suggesting I check out ExPo. At the time I was heading on a trip south of the border so was looking for somebody to jump in the truck with me and go! ExPo provided that, although the guy didn't turn out to be somebody I got along with. A year later it was a flip side, ie I found a guy on ExPo to jump into my truck for another trip, he and I got along well and became friends.

What do I like about ExPo!? I like that it has so many members. I like that it is based on travel by 4wd vehicle, although some times I do wonder! I like that it has a lot of trips reports to read and enjoy. I like that the owners and mods are still active not just sit behind the screen and play god. I actually hit up the main page every day or two and do enjoy some of the articles posted on there.

What do I dislike about ExPo!? The bad language filter. The amount of clueless drones. The total lack of ability to discuss things that have to do with politics or religion. The very structured format that is for certain focused on making money. The total lack of responsibility by travelers and this they show on the forum. I am known for being against the grain in some of the largest topics on ExPo, aka the Congo thread or the more recent Nightmare in Peru thread. The total lack of support by the owners and mods to back up responsible travel. The tone in trips reports as of the last few years, especially down the Pan Am. Like it is a party and free for all and screw all the locals, their traditions, laws and beliefs! Yes I read this in trip reports these days on ExPo, in particular down the Pan Am. Let just have our fun, be arrogant ignorant N. Americans and expect everybody in our path to agree with us and be cool with our N. American lifestyle and beliefs. It has gotten really old for me as of late, so bad that I have a hard time not commenting on trip reports and the lame stuff posted by the authors. In fact I stopped reading trips reports down the Pan Am on ExPo because of this general tone that has taken them over in the last few years. What else do I not like about ExPo!? Hmmmnnn, let me see. I don't like the general attitude of bolting it on rather than making it yourself. I don't like repeated threads about "what is the best expedition truck for me" or "what is the best tire on my truck" kind of threads. I hate to be an arse but come on people, are we really this low and stupid in our posts now!? Don't understand how to use the "search" function or think for yourselves!? I dislike the fear mongering type threads on there too, the whole "don't go to Mexico" thing. I dislike all the main page articles about Jeeps and Toyotas. It gets old hearing about the same types of trucks over and over! How about some articles about different trucks? Perhaps some that go against the grain!? However, they do put up the occasional article that is not with the norm and I enjoy these a lot.

But overall ExPo is great. It happens to be where I found some friends and learned about overland travel beyond what I thought I knew. Overall though, I am posting less and less over there these days. Which is part of the reason I made it over here!

Cheers

I'm betting this is Ian from JH, WY. Welcome. I really like the work you're doing restoring the Patrol - amazing attention to detail. Rare to see that level of craftsmanship today - you should be proud of your skills.

Thanks for the props my man! I feel extremely lucky and fortunate to be able to do up the 64 Patrol. I am a good sales man and sold myself and the truck on the project but none the less it has been an opportunity of a lifetime for me, being as I am just a regular joe who didn't go to school for this stuff. With 20yrs experience with these trucks though I am the man for the job. I know them like them back of my hand. The owner has also been very easy to work with and he has been a Patrol owner and enthusiast since 1968! So that helps a lot. Any ways cheers and thanks again for the props.

I have spent many hours over at the other forum and that is how I found this one. I too read the rules and found it clean, simple and honest. I also particularly like the rules on build threads. I have built several Mustangs, a couple track worthy ones at that and found most of my information on various forums and having hijacked build threads makes it really difficult and frustrating to follow what is really going on. Not to mention trying to keep a logical order to your own build.

As for the other important items, God (the most imortant), family, guns and values etc, it's nice to see a forum with many like minded people.

Glad to be here and cannot wait to meet some of you out in the wild.

Welcome aboard, Liquidamber. I'm a former cabinet builder myself :) I still get a taste of it every now and then at work when we get a vehicle project that requires a cabinet, and just finished the majority of the work on my own drawer setup for my 4Runner (details to get posted soon).
