Jumping ship

So it seems to me that everyone is starting to jump ship from our old favorite forum to come over here? I can't say that I am surprised. For the first year or so I hardly ever ventured out of the vehicle specific tech, but every time I did I was met by some granola eating "overlander" that was more upset about displaced mud than the possible closure of Johnson valley.

After all that happened I think the Gun thread was the straw that broke the camels back. Am I right? Too bad seeing as I just barely got my stickers put on my rig. Not sure Im proud to be on that forum anymore. I will keep going back as there is some great info that just hasn't made its way over here yet, but I think ill spend my time helping build up the info library over here for the time being.

Jon

Also, can we get something cool under our names saying that we were part of the first 50 to join the forum? That would be cool.

I am glad this site is here. I know that the info content will continue to expand and rival other sites.

I do feel a little wierd when I'm on the site that shall not be named. Sort of like having lunch with an ex girlfriend while the new hot girlfriend is waiting for you.

So far the content hasn't offended me. Not that I ever expect it to.

FYI, You can change the title under your name in your profile! :) ...To anything you want! Well, almost.

As for other forums, I'm still frequenting ExPo, etc.. I think most of my NEW content will wind up here though...

I don't really see this as a competing site, there are some things they don't allow, which I can discuss here. They have to figure that what's going to be said is going to be said SOMEWHERE, and they don't want it said in their house, and that's their right. But I'm not letting that stop me from finding a venue that allows it.

Thats what we hope for, members who contribute and not just opine. Members who are self sufficeint, take the lead in promoting travels and gatherings, share quality information, can partake in honest and open discussion like men of principal. Members of this site should feel as it is as much theirs as the people who watch over it. Dave is providing the venue, it is up to us to fill it with good stuff. Not just info, but in the way we interact with each other. Mutual respect from all, deep thought before responding, a good dose humor as none of us should take ourselves too seriously and the serving of numerous pies. Because the answer to all questions is pie...preferably lemon...or strawberry rhubarb...or dried apple raisin...or...

Maybe we should wait to the first 300..we'll call you the Spartans...return with your shield or on it! :viking

This is my approach too.

There are a lot good people and info over there and many of us have quite a bit of ourselves over there. Its like a diner...our old one changed the menu and caters to a new crowd. Dave built a new greasy spoon for us here, the menu is a little light right now but it will expand fast. But you'll still pop into that old diner from time to time to see whats up and make fun of all the yuppies.

The is room for both places. They are marketed to different people. ExPo is geared to the world adventurist and AAv is geared more to the American adventurist. They both will have value. It just comes down to what you value and need. No need to bash either one.

Well said gentlemen; agree on all counts. I look at them as mentors of sorts and certainly colleagues. You can certainly make the claim that they were the inspiration for this site.

It seems like I am member of too many forums, but I guess that's just the way it is if you want to have a variety of interests.

I love the Expo Portal, but I'm not a gearhead, so my interest in the vehicles is limited. I also don't have much funds. I just enjoy outdoor adventures. If the vehicle is a means to that end, then so much the better.

I didn't feel like Expo was catering more to the international adventurer to the exclusion of the domestic. Even though I'm staying stateside for the time being, I still enjoy living vicariously through those folks and enjoy their trip reports. I don't know that I'd ever take a year long trip from Cairo to Cape Town, but I wouldn't mind doing parts of those adventures a la carte.

I'm a vegan and they began to charge too much for beans and rice. Started calling it "cuisine" instead of food.

Did I get in on the first 50? How can you tell your sign-up number? ---I can't find the setting to change the tag words under the user name.
I like Mark's Spartans idea.... ....but the film was a bit, you know, well, Studio 54-ish... Lots of chiseled abs and back-slapping....

Just hover your cursor over your name. Your number displays in a little box at the bottom of the page. :stars Make some noise for number 43 - HillDwelleeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!:run

But that wasn't my HS number (said in his Al Bundy voice).
Thanks.

Damn, i'm 51. I feel like Charlie Brown on Halloween..."I got a rock"

I do believe this site was needed, thanks for starting this guys. If you need any help running this feel free to reach out at any time.

Since this is a more American, and specifically a USA based (in design, creed, and reason for existence)site, perhaps we should use a less International number. We could honor our unique history and call the first 56 people our Founding Fathers and Founding Mothers (I know there are a couple of Ladies who are early adopters, they should be as highly regarded as the Gents).

That is a great idea.

I still enjoy visiting expo, and probably will for a long time. There is tons of great info for travel, gear and vehicular modification. What dissapointed me was that when I would venture out of those areas, I often discovered I had very little in common with euro members and their political views.

It just has "seemed" to me that over the years, I felt like I fit in less and less over on ExPo. Kind of like the patrons (especially the earliest members) were not as important as the advertisers or the "new-bees" that are ready to run up the credit card for all the "trick" kit that they just have to own (but don't need) to be in the EXPEDITION in-crowd.

I also gave up sharing my vehicle builds because I left like I was just contributing to an "empire" that didn't give a rats-arse about me.

Good luck, Dave & krewe! I'll gladly contribute here.

That makes me #30. :D
Regardless of the number, I'm glad to be here. As others have said, I'll still show my ugly mug over there, but I'll be bringing any new content here. My goal for this year is two fold: Spend more time outside and less time clicking "new posts;" and try to lose some weight while doing it. Hopefully that will drive some decent content along the way.

Dan
