Dave's Jeep JT Gladiator: The 'Gator

The whole point of having a truck is to be able to carry gear for outdoor activities. Today was another win for the trusty cargo carrier!

End of an era today. After 3 years of faithful service, I’m retiring the Leitner rack and moving towards full coverage in the bed.

I’ve been watching the canopy/shell scene for years and was excited to see AluCab enter the fray with their Contour Canopy for the Gladiator. Luckily, Tiny Rig had some inbound and I was able to score one.

I went very minimalist here with no side windows, the table option (which is the bees knees) and the low profile load bars.

All doors open. Center flex, waterproof hinges – prevents rainwater dripping into the canopy when the doors are open.

The shell weighs 120 lbs. I’m at about 135 lbs with the load bars and the table. Seriously.

I was at 185 lbs with the Leitner rack, so this is a solid 50 lb weight savings while also adding the utility of an onboard table that dismounts quickly without the need for a yard sale.

Outstanding fit and finish, LED third (fourth?) brake light, 3 interior LED lights, front mounted positive pressure venting to manage dust infiltration, and bolted directly to the OEM rail system with burly hardware.

Note how well the rear door follows the lines of the bed/tailgate area for complete sealing from rain.

Looks great, Dave. I'm really looking forward to a long-term report on dust ingress - I know if anyone will put that particular criterion to the test, it'll be you.

(Holding out hope that we can collectively solve that issue, as I really want to want a habitat/shell option, but hate hate hate having dust in something I want to be "living space".)

I’m hoping that the front mounted positive pressure venting system helps with that. I added bulb gasket around the tailgate today and have a few holes to seal up but I’m hopeful that it will be acceptable.

Here’s the positive pressure vent from the inside.

I'm also curious to see the effectiveness of that pressure vent on the new Contours. I'm worried about dust ingress on my Explorer, and also did a bulb gasket around my tailgate, which proved quite effective. Although there are some drain holes that we'll need to plug in the bed itself, I have no doubt that the standard AluCab/TinyRig install on the bed is solid and sealed.

And man, that table looks spiffy and nicely stowed... I may have to give in and get some accessories added to mine. You have any detailed photos of the table on the ceiling of the canopy?

Are we talking the occasional So Cal rain or the months on end drizzle with a heavy dump every 4th day PNW rain? ;)

Even worse. I’m talking Florida hurricane rain ;)

There’s a double seal on the rear hatch there I should get a photo of.
