So I'll be the one to bring this up.. As a supporter who has been watching the kickstarter... What's the plan? It's not looking like the goal will be met, but I can't see this venture NOT happening.. Am I the only one?

Chazz it was nice to finally meet you, Dani and Brian in person. Thanks for stopping by the campfire. Endeavor has been funded a wee bit more:D

Agreed. It was nice to meet you, Chazz. Dani was super friendly while my wife and I were picking up trash in the same general area. Very nice to meet her, too.

If you were subscribed to Kickstarter for updates this will all look familiar. For everyone else...

It's official, we did not reach our Kickstarter goal, but...you guessed it: we're going to build it anyway!

We're making a few changes to the subscriptions, the swag, and the magazine based on feedback you've given us opportunities discovered along the way. Our mission remains the same though: independent reviews, community-driven content, and most importantly adventure-focused articles.

Adventurist Life is launching in April.

So, why Kickstarter?

We had a few reasons for the Kickstarter, but first and foremost: we wanted to prime our 2016 editorial budget before we had enough subscriptions to support it. Sure we are storytellers, but we're building a magazine, not just a blog. We're building the magazine we've all wanted to read for a long time, and we want to read more than our own stories.

The adventurists writing those stories deserve more than just "exposure," which we all know won't fill an empty tank. 80% of the Kickstarter goal (minus the rewards for subscriptions) was destined to support the writers and photographers. Rest assured, we are still committed to laying a community- and contributor-first foundation to build Adventurist Life.

The Kickstarter, and the statistics gained from it, also paint a clear picture of who will read the magazine. When authors return from epic adventures, we want them to think of you. We want the readers at the front of their minds—before they even leave! This will only happen if they know our subscribers value quality content, and you've just proven this fact.

How will we keep the lights on now?

We still believe our fellow adventurists are willing to pay for meaningful content—content that puts your needs above corporate interests. We believe when business exists to make a difference, profit will follow. As we gain subscribers, we'll invest those funds into the premium content we want to share with you. The more subscribers we have, the more stories we can afford, the more stories we publish.

In the meantime, we're willing to bootstrap this idea with our own money as best we can. But, we also know it's going to take more to make this dream a reality. We've said it before: the big magazines make more money selling ads than selling issues—often by a factor of 3:1. The smaller, digital magazine space isn't much different. Just look at all the free review gear floating around. We believe there's a better way.

To supplement what we bring in from subscriptions and swag sales, we'll also be reaching out to a select few partners who can help us bring you more content and increase awareness for Adventurist Life. Most will be folks you already know and trust: fellow adventurists who join us at Rendezvous events, participate in building our community, and deserve to be featured in our pages.

We know Adventurist Life will grow and our budget woes will be a thing of the past. For now we need to be frugal. Hosting, email, decal and shirt giveaways, and graphics on the vehicles—it's all out-of-pocket, and we will continue picking up the slack as long as we can. We're running down a dream, and that's what it takes.

And that feels right.

So, the Plan B: 1-2-3

We sat down with many of you at Desert Rendezvous. We got to know some of you around many a campfire. Brian and I also got a much needed chance to discuss the details of Plan B:
  1. Adventurist Life launches in April. Can you help us test drive it? If so, you get an early peek behind the curtain. Please drop us a line and let us know so we can keep you in that loop on another channel.
  2. Our store will be opening soon. When it does you'll be able to sign up for subscriptions, grab some swag to show your support, and occasionally buy lightly-used gear from product reviews (helping us cover the costs involved). We have something special in the works for everyone who pledged their support on the Kickstarter as well.
  3. We're always looking for content. Could you trade exposure, membership, or such for a story or two while we get this thing up to speed? We're confident you could consider it an investment in future earnings.

Ping us!
Today we're at a crossroads. We're resolved to the path less traveled. It's far more rewarding.

If you're interested in helping us with Plan B—or in any other way—please ping us. Let us know what you think, what you want, what you need. We are at your service.

You can always reach us here or at ping@adventurist.life.

Glad to hear you guys are moving forward with it.

I'll be just as happy to purchase a subscription as I was to back the kickstarter. Between this, and what the guys at Adventure Journal are doing, the outdoor adventure magazine space is about to get really exciting.

If you guys have any use for an aquatic biologist with dreams of writing and being artistic, let me know. I should warn you that the writing is atrocious. Unless you're looking for writing that belongs in a very specific subset of science journal.

Confession: I'm super excited to see what Adventure Journal releases as well. I signed up the day they opened up subscriptions.

If you have a story you'd like us to look over feel free to send it in. We're always looking for new content, and at the very least we'd be happy to give feedback and pointers on achieving those dreams. :)
