2018 Sprinter 4x4 144"...Take 2

I mean, dont run out?
it's a 5k mile def tank. if you run out and are on limp mode, its your own damn fault. Also you get 5 starts when you run completely out.

That's not it. I'm reading people on trips filling up at 2500 but it still doesn't register that it was refilled.

The principle of "Seven P's" apply - Proper Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance. The number 1 rule of vehicle dependent travel. :tango

I just spent a few more minutes reading a bit more about DEF. Some interesting properties:

  • Starts freezing at 12f
  • Could freeze sooner if there's contamination
  • It's not burned in the engine, it works with the platinum catalyst in the emissions system
  • Contaminated DEF tanks can cause problems
  • Some DEF Tanks have heaters for cold climate use
  • If your DEF freezes in a cold climate, you might encounter issues since it'll take a while to defrost if you don't have a heater
  • DEF Tank is not filtered like fuel or motor oil is
  • DEF use varies in cold humid vs warm dry climates
  • DEF use varies by manufacturer (if looking outside of Mercedes) -- rule of thumb, more def = less egr | less def = more egr
  • filling up DEF in a dusty/dirty/contaminated environment can cause DEF system issues
  • keep things clean around the filler cap or you'll regret it (don't rest the cap on a dirty surface, use a spray bottle and some disposable shop towels to spray down and wipe the area before opening)
  • ~$195 at the dealership to reset it from limp mode if you can't

this is pretty much why im deleting it. lol

also, if you are taking a sprinter on a trip and dont have a decent code reader (you can reset the 5 start counter) then life is rough

haha, I didn't even know that the delete was possible.

* add to sprinter parts shopping list *

^^^^Don't try that in CA, you won't pass the smog test. Gas engines in CA get a 5 year waiver from smog testing when new...diesels don't get that. Smog test every two years...despite the fact that there are still NO standards for a diesel smog test in CA.

To bring it up current.

Wanted to start the fridge/cabinet base for the door opening, so built out the base!

I used more screws than needed, but i like the look, so there is that.

Today after work ill be framing out the driver side cabinet. Ill be doing the kitchen on that side in front of the window this time, with storage and all that stuff on the passenger door side as well.

Anything happen to you? It's been like 9 days since any update and I am having withdrawals. :D

lol Lots done. just not updating as often since noone is seemingly paying attention. was just gonna do a few more updates. im about 70% done with it

sorry.. lurking is a hard habit to break.. I read and enjoy almost all of the posts on this forum, but I tend to never add to the convo... but please continue, loving the build!

edited twice because I can't type.... maybe lurking isn't such a bad thing....

Please continue!! I love build threads. But yes its hard to comment at times because I feel like I am always just saying looks great or something.

I have been following your builds (both Sprinters) and have been loving it. You have been doing things that I am taking note of, if we go down the path of a Sprinter build. The interior config is what has been interesting me the most as I am using your pics/ideas to see if this is going to fit our needs. I also want to hear your feedback on the driving aspect offroad, as you journey around.

Please share with us, like you did with your first build! :D

Wish is my command

Building the kitchen cabinet. Will contain two doors and three drawers.
Dometic stove and sink on the right in front of the window. Water jug under the sink, storage on the left, with the vertical cabinet on top on the left, like the last van, except this one is a two piece unit instead of a single unit.

Very cool. Thanks for updating!

IIRC, your other build had some cool "portable" kitchen unit. Is there a reason you didn't use that again?

It's 2 grand, I didnt take it out of the van near as much as I thought I would, and I wanted the kitchen on the other side with a window so if it's nasty out I dont have to open the door to cool.
Dometic supplied the stove and sink as well.

Figured id be an overlander and get a skottle for outside cooking.
