2016 Dutch Oven Contest, Desert Rendezvous

Well it looks like life is taking a hold more than usual. I'm out on the DO contest as I'm not able to allocate research time for this, but I'll be attending still.

no research needed, take something you cook in the oven at home, place in dutch oven, add heat and cross fingers. It is simple

Richard, it looks like you might be shamed into participating!

Let me help you out with a simple recipe.

Bean Stew

Start by putting one or two pounds of ground beef, a pound of chopped bacon, chopped onion, salt and pepper into the Dutch oven. Put coals under the pot and brown the meat, bacon, onion in the Dutch oven until the meat is brown in color and the bacon is done. Pour out the liquid while keeping a bit of the bacon grease.

Pull out the three to five cans of beans you bought at the truck stop on the way to the Rendezvous. Think about maybe picking the BBQ beans on the shelf along with the, black beans, white beans, baked beans or whatever kind of beans you find. It really does not matter!

Using your trusty P-38, open all the cans of beans, pour out the water in the cans and dump the beans into the Dutch oven over the ground beef and bacon. Because you could not help yourself and the truck stop lady said it was good; squirt in a bottle of BBQ sauce and a bottle of ketchup. Season and spice to taste. ( If you accidentally chop up some kielbasa and throw it in the pot at the same time as the beans ... that's OK!)

Stir all the components together in the pot and put hot coals under the pot and on the lid. Stir occasionally and let simmer.

Serve when hot and take home the grand prize!!!

OK, now you really don’t have an excuse!

:lurk

I think you're right @TemboTusk . Dutch Oven ordered. I need to stop coming onto this forum as you guys are a horribly awesome influence. What am I saying, it was an eventuality anyways. :band

Good on ya Richard! A little shaming never hurts!!!

I love Bean Stew! Can't wait to taste!

So this came in today. Jerry, I think I'm just going to go all in and try something a little more ethnic :)

I think Machelle and I are going to make Aebleskiver's this year. Not made in a Dutch Oven, but it is a cast iron pan.

There's a fair chance of flambe, Woody. I'll be using hot oil again, I have a history of setting the desert on fire!

What's ethnic to Torrance?

Ethnic as in non-white people food, something from my blood lines. Current location has nothing to do with ethnicity (it's in the dictionary :thumbsup ). Torrance actually has a very high Asian and White population. You might say my ethnicity is the former of the two so I'll be adding my culinary experiment to the mix. Hopefully it's not a disaster as I've never cooked anything in a Dutch Oven.
