July Monthly AAV SoCal Trail Run

Location:Pioneer Town to Big Bear
When:July 31st - Sunday
Duration: Day Run

Difficulty:2-5 (Scale of 1-10)
Organizer(s):Brett (IronworksTactical)
Trail Leader(s): Brett & TBD

Meet Location and Time:Pappy and Harriots parking lot @ 0900, we will conduct a driver meeting at 0930 and then head out.

Route: We will take 2N02 Burns Canyon (TR:1-3) to 2N61Y Heartbreak Ridge (TR:4-7, we will be avoiding the sluice loop which is the higher rating area, nothing over about a 5 on this route) and back to Burns Canyon rd where we will break for a short lunch at Rose Mine area (unless we are making great time then we will break further up the road). Depending on how quickly we are moving we will either take 3N03 Smarts Ranch rd (TR: 1-4) to 3N61 Jacoby Canyon (TR:3-5) where we can finish it off there or press on through 3N16 Holcomb (TR:2-4) and drop down 2N09 Polique Canyon (TR:1-2) finishing off the day in Big Bear.
TR = Trail Rating

Alternate ending: Instead of hitting Smart Ranch Rd we can continue on Burns and exit Baldwin Lake Rd and drive through Big Bear and head for home. This will cut a decent amount of trail off but gives us a short out if we for some reason are taking way to long and are behind schedule which can happen.

Also the nice thing about this route is at anytime anything is more difficult than anyone or their rig is capable we can just use the easier alternate parallel trails.

Route Description: Burns, Holcomb and Smart Ranch Rd are basically graded roads. Heartbreak Ridge has some slow moving technical sections that can be easily navigated without armor, Jacoby is slightly harder and probably should have armor. I have ran all of these trails without armor and have ran with people who also didn't have armor without any damage. However just know if you don't have armor and you're a little heavy on the foot or stray from the line at all you can always incur damage, that is the drivers responsibility solely. There are no boulders on this trail normally. Again this area allows me to tailor it to the rigs who sign up and can be as easy as we want it to be so don't stress.

A little clip from a couple weeks ago in the same area, the only reason the 4runner in front of me was slipping is he wasnt using his rear locker. The most technical part of the trail starts right about 0:15 in the beginning.

Rig Requirements:
4x4
Rear Lockers
Front and rear recovery points
2" or more lift
Suggested vehicle mods (not required):
Sliders
Front traction control, limited slip locker or air locker

Communication: HAM 146.460

Depending on WHO signs up I will be keeping this list for now to 10. If anyone is intimately knowledgeable of these areas please step up so you can assist me in running this. It would be greatly appreciated.

Stock Jeep TJ with 31"s, yay or nay? I won't be offended if you say it's a little too agro.

Put me down although I'm a little concerned about my rig, only because this will be my first trail run. It's a 2011 4Runner Trail so it has a rear locker and all sorts of electronic gizmos to "assist" with off roading. It's stock height with larger tires and does have sliders. Do I meet the MQs? I'll need to buy a HAM finally even though I can only listen.

Count Me in

I lead trail drives up in Bear for my Church and friends pretty often. the route you picked out is pretty much an "everyone can make it if they are willing". Should be a great time!

to put in perspective, I have run the entire section in a YJ with a 2 inch lift shackle and 31's, LSD in the rear, air down and pay attention to your spotters and you should be fine. your tub's should be fine dont look at me if you get the ole bfg fender flare groove though lol.

I will have plenty of straps and recovery gear for multiple rigs. I look forward to it!!

my name is Adam
Rig is a 91 YJ, Rubicon Express 4.5, Super 30 with ARB up front, Super Dana 44 ARB in the rear, 4.56's, on board air, 33's. 12K winch.

I am not a spambot,I have been an undocumented lurker for a bit lol.

List updated.

Hove102 and RoamingRobertson you two will be fine, just need to be aware of your vehicle and its foot print and pay attention to the spotter as BanginGears stated.

I may utilize your expertise BanginGears if thats okay with you?

RoamingRobertson if you dont want to drop alot of money on a Ham i suggest looking at the little Baofeng handheld. They are about $25-30 and have great battery life and are perfect for trail runs like these.

Don't worry buddy, I've taken my '15 T4R Trail over almost all of those roads/trails. You'll be fine, the T4R is ridiculously capable and all those gizmos do their job perfectly. Also, grab a small handheld HAM, the Baofeng is a good affordable choice, you can chat back and forth on the trails easily as long as you stay in simplex mode and stay off the repeaters.

Always down to help! You just let me know!

Just an FYI, SCCX will be conducting an Adopt-A-Trail cleanup along 2N02 on July 31 so there will be a large group of Xterras out on the trail. We will most likely be monitoring/using 146.535 and I will keep an eye on this thread to see what freq you will be using to make life easier.
