Ok, someone please tell me what a growler is?

Are you talking kilt lifter by pike brewing, or a different brewery?
Most growlers are glass, but some are not. Hydroflask for example makes an insulated metal one.
They come in different sizes but 64oz (a half gallon, not a full gallon) is most common in my experience.

Too bad CA law prevents breweries from filling the hydroflask. I was pretty upset when I found that one out.
I heard they were trying to change that, but I'm not sure what the status is. You can always get a legal growler fill then carefully transfer to the Hydroflask at home. Just make sure the container is properly clean and minimize any foaming when you pour.

So are we allowed to bring glass growlers, just not glass bottles? If so, then I might just fill up my growler from http://www.wolfcreekbrewingco.com/
IIRC, techinically, glass growlers are not allowed.. I think.
BLM Rules said:4. Possession of glass beverage containers is prohibited in all developed sites and areas and all ORV open areas. This rule is in effect for all Off-Road Vehi-cle (ORV) open areas and also developed
sites and areas managed by the El Centro, Barstow, Palm Springs-South Coast, Ridgecrest, and Needles Field Offices.
We were at Fiesta Island a few years back (when alcohol was allowed), a buddy of mine (Bud) was drinking Corona's out of a glass bottle. The police stopped by, told him he couldn't drink out of glass bottles on the beach. Bud said OK, reached into his Jeep, pulled out his coffee cup, which was blue colored glass, poured the beer in that. The po-po thanked us for being co-operative and went on her way. The rest of us could hardly contain ourselves watching the whole thing go down.
