[ research ] Adventurist 101: What is adventure?

I like both Outings and Adventures. To me, when the group vibe is, "Are you sure this is a good idea?", I call it an Adventure. Outings are fun too, familiar friends and sites...but I'd rather go on an Adventure!

To add to the "Swope Manual of Recreational Terms," if @Al Swope says. "watch this," authorities usually describe it in their report as, "blunt force trauma." :D

Noted.

I like the distinction between outings and adventure. It reminds me show Roy Chapman Andrews said adventure is the result of poor or insufficient planning. Of course, he was coordinating hundreds of men, camels, and supplies across outer Mongolia in search of fossils, so he had work to do.

I wonder, what do you guys think about that qualifier; completing a mission? I can see why someone like Chapman might not want "adventure," but at the same time, hunting for fossils seems like an adventure to me! What do you think?

Missions mean goals and deadlines and quantitative results...that's work. Screw that, that's my everyday life.

Adventure is the opposite of that... Free form, unscheduled and open to whatever comes to pass.

Continuing my adventure in PA, I found out that a Cigars international superstore was 30 minutes from my hotel.. So I hopped in my rental car and boogied up there to enjoy some beer and Cigars...

I wanted one of those patches so bad. They sold out by the time I got the chance to buy one.

Wow, It's like we're the same person, our lives have so many parallels !

Roy Chapman Andrews was born in Wisconsin.
I was born in Minnesota, the state next door to Wisconsin!

He was a Boy Scout, I was a Boy Scout! Sounds crazy but it's true!

He crossed Mongolia in a fleet of Dodge cars, I crossed Baja in a FJ Cruiser, the old Dodges where better than the new Dodges so?

He discovered Fossil Dinosaur Eggs, I had basted eggs for breakfast! (OK that's a stretch)

He divorced wife, they had two sons, BINGO! (makes up for the eggs)

His wife wrote a book, my wife read a book! I know it's really eerie!!

It has been said the movie "Indiana Jones" was "inspired" by him, the movie "Indiana Jones" Inspired me & I have a hat like his!

George Lucas, made the movie Indiana Jones, I met George Lucas's nephew.

Retired to Carmel-by-the-sea, CA., I retired to Fallbrook, CA.

This is just freaky!

He died at 76...shit, I only have about 8 years left? OK, that's enough of this shit I got to get going.

To quote Wally Byam. "Adventure is everywhere but sitting in your living room."

While I don't want to travel across Africa etc. I do really enjoy meandering around the desert without a destination. Seeing and finding whatever I can. To me that is adventure and more importantly it exposes me to wonderment.

Agreed.

For me, it is doing something, new, like my rescent trip to Moab for the EJS. My first trip to moab. I learned just how capable my JGC is, my self too.

No problem.. Its all about paying it forward. People have done similar for me.
Thanks for the patch! That was really nice of you. I'll make sure to pass on the kind gesture when the opportunity presents is self.
