Recycle Reuse

So my Lil guy needed some book shelves for his books. Well I still had a couple of pallets that I brought home from work so I decided to make some book shelves out of them.

Here is what it looked like after I cut it and added a bottom to it

I then added a weathered grey stain to it

Tomorrow once they are dry I'm going to take a sand paper to it and make it look more weathered....

It's illegal to burn pallets in most SoCal deserts because of the nails/staples that are left.

As part of the Desert Rendezvous a couple of us spent a good half hour, 45 minutes doing nothing but picking through a couple of mounds near camp picking up nails from where someone had obviously burned pallets. Based on a dumbell curl test, we probably picked up 20-30 pounds of nails.

I have a magnet-on-a-stick from construction work. I started taking it when out shooting or camping to clean up sites. At one place we shoot, somebody decided it was a good place to dump their woodstove ashes that were full of nails. I've cleaned those piles up several times. It about filled a 2 gal bucket each time.

If finding nails is a regular thing, the magnet-on-a-stick was about $12 at the hardware store.

Raul, good idea for the book rack.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing.

They are also pretty handy to clean up steel cased commie made ammo empties. Most people end up leaving them littering the ground at shooting spots. I clean them up now and then, hoping we dont get our public land shooting spot closed because of lazy people that dont clean up after themselves, and leave junk they shoot at behind.

Nice work Raul! My little ones book collection needs some self space too. Where did you come up with this idea? Instructables.com has some great ideas for reusing and repurposing stuff like pallets.
I remember my wife showing me somewhere about a wine rack that is pretty made exactly the same. I figured it would work as a book shelf too. It's just two of those racks on top of each other.

Just showed my wife your bookshelves Raul...she is so jacking your idea! Just have to find some good pallets at work now!

So that solid surface counter stuff is awesome. I found some at a thrift store and bought it just to mess with. Its very workable with routers. Unfortunately its also heavy. What if you made and indent in it, like a slightly sunken cutting board. The indent would hold delicious meat juices from dripping all over your bear infested camp. Or you could make ones with logos in them... like AAV logos. Or you could put your overland bound serial number/logo in them and sell them for a fortune!

Holy thread resurrection. Skimming through it I'm left wondering how folks like those hard surfaces for cutting boards- they have to destroy your knife's edge. The do make nice trivets at home though.

A while back I grabbed a couple of pieces of granite sink cutouts at the local granite and marble countertop place to use with leatherworking stuff. I just asked nicely and they told me to take all of the scraps I wanted. There were some pieces that would have been good for other small projects but I didn't need them; there are videos on youtube that show you how to cut and polish the stuff yourself.
