Overlanding from a non overlander POV

I enjoyed this just for the casual nature of take on overlanding. Warrior Poet has a good you tube channel if you are interested in guns, defefnse, etc... More real world from a guy who does not take himself quite as seriously as some of the "tactical" guys out there.

I did like the first video in the OP. But sometimes I feel like I'm the only one that doesn't watch YouTube. Especially content like the second video by LLOD. I don't hate it, but it just doesn't DO anything for me other than burn up time.

Maybe I'll start carrying a selfie stick around and run my mouth while recording random thoughts and other horseshit... add a few drone shots and some time in post-edit and voila! I'll be legit... haha

Have to agree. My litmus test for YouTube videos is whether or not it's about THEM or WHERE they went. If it's just a "watch me play with my toys in the woods" video I'll take a hard pass. But if i watch the video and I have a desire to go where they want because they've given me enough information about where they went, then I'll get hooked.

Not to treadjack, but right now my "Overland Mount Rushmore" is, in no particular order:
  • Lifestyle Overland
  • The Road Chose Me
  • Venture 4wd
  • Trail Recon
For the most part those content creators give me enough to subscribe and check back to see what they're up do. The rest (not naming names) I couldn't care less about because they end up being smoke shows.

Anytime I start hearing that "Word" I cringe. It's become just as bad as when everything became "Tactical" I wonder why simply using Off-roading, Wheeling, Camping or even Boonie Bouncin are words I never much hear anymore. Whenever I hear that word that shall not be spoken, I think of a buncha yuppies that drive around from park campsite to campsite with doylies under their plates and wine glasses making youtube videos of them roughin it. Those videos do nothing but bring more of those glampers out that in the middle of nowhere desert see you and think they should pull up right next to you to enjoy the great outdoors. :viking

In my head "OVERLANDING" implies that you are completely off of any form of road...incorrect...for half the people out there sporting the "look" a paved/pot-holed road with no center lane stripes, into a developed campsite, is "overlanding". I love those guys, they end up selling their stuff for $.50 on the $1 after the reality of driving the monstrosity they built is a miserable commuter vehicle! o_O

1. VERY RARE that I'll watch a U-Tube video, maybe a generational thing...those that know me know that I rarely even take pictures, much less demonstrate to the whole interweb that I kind of, sort of, really know what I'm doing, but have my moments.

2. Overlanding, tactical, Mil-Spec, etc...must not be much to see there, quality products hype themselves without the catch phrase/word. I've NEVER used any of those words when doing a product search..."4-season, 4 man tent" gets more options than "tactical 4 man tent"...just Googled it for amusement...this came up, actually kind of a cool looking tent for a minimalist

3. I've used "adventure travel" over the years to describe what I/most of us do when telling others about my trips.

Basically, I take back roads/dirt roads when possible, sleep in a tent (these days). When things go wrong it makes a trip memorable ( the Baja 1000 delayed 24 hours by mud, as a recent example). I'm not a "prepper" but I usually have what I need to resolve the issue one way or another. An extra day of food/water/refreshments and other basic necessities weren't an issue for our group of 15 or so people at our pit location for the 1000, an extra day of doing nothing in Baja was tough, but we sucked it up!

Have fun out there, that's the important part!

I watch very little "O" word You Tube video's. I do enjoy Primal Outdoors video even though Jason uses word overlanding in his videos he has a lot of great photography in his travels, he's a full size truck w\ Drifter Trailer adventurist & his travels are quit to my type of travels & adventures.
Their a phrase in the prepper coumminty "being the Gray Man" the idea of a person who does not draw attention to himself or stand out in the normal inhabinant of a location in any way. This person can move throught a group of people with out anyone taking notice of him.
Sally & I are nomads in our adventure travels & we like it that way, we spend 95% of our travels offroad to our selves & 5% with our son & his family in public camp grounds.. We(Sally & I) like plotting out our adventures on paper maps, small handheld GPS device getting to our destination & tackling any obstacles on the way is just part of the fun of journey & the memories we make. IMO a lot of these You Tubers are want-a-be celebrities w\high maintance needs of attention, but that my opinion. If I'm seeking information I can get solid well grounded information here @ American Adventurist with many of it's member have vast of knowledge & experience.

I watch Warrior Poet for his expertise in things I want to learn to be better at and his ability to not take himself so seriously. Many "experts" in all realms fail mightily at that part of it. It is convenient when I cannot sleep and am tired of reading, so fits well into my not infrequent nights lurking around the house while Ann and Joe sleep. And...

I think there is room for the youtubers, you just have to be selective on who you spend time watching and make sure it helps you in whatever way you are looking for.

Legit? Depends on how many likes you get and how many followers you have. Image 2500 years from now, some historian will be researching the 21st century. The historical record will only show what was popular, lol. My secret fantasy is that some future archaeologist will dig up some preppers lair and find an 80s era CR500. He'll synthesize some fuel, figure out the kick start, take off, and immediately fall on his/her/they/we ass.

I watch a fair bit of YouTube.

Last Line Of Defense, channel does nothing for me. This is the guy that filmed with the Poet Warrior.

Primal Outdoors, channel is very enjoyable based in Oregon, I know Jason and he is a down to earth.

4XOverland, channel does legit trips based is Australia and has lived/traveled all over Africa. A bit older than myself and generally isn't full of crap!

Cheap RV Living, channel about cheap living in a van, RV, camper, car on public land. Defiantly not a #vanlife channel. Again not a young hipster the guy is just sharing how to live inexpensively on what your budget allows.

The rest of the channels are how to make, fabricate, or repair something channels. I told Stacey years ago to get rid of sat TV.

As a former owner of a KX500, he'll break his knee when the compression shoves said knee into the handlebar!

Warrior Poet is ok but his take on hand guns is very one sided, he’s a Glock fan boy.
Try Clint Smith of Thunder Ranch, he’s hilarious,

I usually watch Primal Outdoors as well as Venture 4wd and occasionally some of the others. What's funny is you can see a lot of them have picked up in Chris' style of videography and incorporate it into their channels. I first noticed it in a Coyoteworks video, it just kind of jumped out at me and I started noticing others starting to do it as well. There are a lot of cringe worthy youtubers though, from the horrible music choices (often too loud), to the chicks in skimpy clothing in thumbnails, to the whinging millennial attitudes, to some really stupid and dangerous stuff, it quickly become apparent who's trying too hard to make money at it and so much of it comes across as fake. As you said, if it doesn't make the place interesting and inspire me to want to see it, I'll probably move on. Occasionally I'll watch gear reviews if someone recommends something or I find something I may be interested in but the rise of "influencers" has gotten retarded.

I agree about not drawing attention to yourself though and other than a couple of forums such as this one I don't do social media; I've never had a facebook account for example and I've never posted pictures of myself.
