New Toyota 4x4

The 2 door Wrangler is a continuation of a long running model. It was not a new model. Look at everything else Jeep sells... 4 doors.

Toyota, I don't recall any 2 door model SUV's being sold in NA in recent years. Closest one I recall was the FJ and it had half rear doors, so not really a 2 door per say. The original RAV4 had a 2 door model but was abandoned in the next refresh. What they do in concept or in other markets is different then what is put into production in NA market.

I don't disagree with you that a 2 door SUV isn't going to dominate sales here in the US, it's not even up for debate. But, if you read what is presented in that article Toyota is clearly talking about an all new replacement for the FJC. Getting really technical--yes, the FJC was not a 2 door--here in reality though, it was not any closer to being a 4 door SUV than an Access Cab Tacoma is a Crew-cab truck. Realistically, the last two door SUV Toyota had in NA was the FJ Cruiser, and it was a successful seller. I have a feeling whatever they make will probably share the same door concept the FJC had to stay practical. If you want to call that a 4-door vehicle, feel free... but I think most people will roll their eyes at you, me included. Also, I never have to look long to find newer 2 door Wranglers on the road.

If it were just me, I’d prefer two doors. But most folks love 4 doors nowadays. Practical in some ways but makes a vehicle much larger.

More recent 2 door SUV that we all forgot about...I saw one today is the only reason I even think of it now is the 2 door Explorer Sport, admittedly never a popular OHV truck when it was new.

The original, (and highly desirable to me when new) was the original 4Runner...bring that back and I may get in the Toyota line. I was this close > < to being a Toyota guy but ended up buying a '91 Wrangler instead of a Toyota.

I remember the Exploder.

Don’t forget the Bronco II and Blazer while we’re muddying the waters here...

Quick Google search, Jeep sales are 2:1 Wrangler 4 door vs 2 door models.

Applying that ratio to three years of average annual sales of Wranglers you get about 65,000, 2 door Jeeps sold a year. Contrast that with an average of only about 25,000 FJ Cruisers sold annually over its long production. It seems there is plenty of room for Toyota to cut into the 2 door 4x4 market and improve on previous sales.

Take the current 5th gen 4 Runner cut it down to a 2 door put the 4.6 V8 and 8 speed auto with a grany low, hmmmm?

Dream 1: A new FJ40, soft and hard top options. Will take immediate market share from the Wrangler if not too watered down like the FJC or @Dave's Pontiac Aztec. Add a V8 and/or diesel option and kick butt.

Dream 2: A US 70 Series. 4 and 2 door options. The engineering is already done, just tweak for our DOT and EPA regulations.

Reality: Maybe a new 4 runner trim package with factory light bar option.

Yeah. When I had my 88 4Runner I actually took the top off pretty regularly. What a great feature.

It's unfortunate, but the way they tried to take the 4Runner upscale over the years, they killed the cool topless 4x4 history that started the whole name plate. A 4x4 SUV line that wasn't even originally a Toyota design or concept. Created for a niche market by Winnebago. I think a company taking similar risk is the only way any of us could possibly see what we want anymore. In this day and age, the risk is too great for anybody to gamble on.

The Toyota Trekker was a cool rig, I’ve only ever seen maybe two of them in real life. The B4Runner.

^^^^Not a Scrambler...a CJ-6, long wheel base without the rear over hang of the CJ-8 Scrambler. I had purchased a CJ-6 carcass when the original Wrangler Unlimited came out, I couldn't unload the CJ-6 fast enough to go buy the Unlimited Rubicon that I have now.

CJ-6...

CJ-8
