Navigation apps

I have no idea ^^ what that thing is. Educate me and the rest of the forum please. Then I'll not to throw it away as "gear adrift."

I have the same one for my iPad if I make it to the next meet n greet I'll bring it.

May be a dumb Question? I have an iPhone. Can I get an android tablet and use it for maps, GPS etc. and not have an Android phone?

Not dumb. Many many Android tablets are "WiFi only" and will work just fine without even a cellular account, let alone any other Android device. The only stipulation for using an Android device is that you will need a gmail account. You don't really need to use it for anything, and you can create one on the fly when you turn on the device for the first time, but Android associates itself to a gmail account (or multiple accounts) for saving application data, etc.

It actually works out really well that they do it that way. Just picked up a Galaxy Tab4 7.0 from CostCo specifically to use for navigation. Booted it up and signed in with my gmail account, and within a few minutes all of my apps (including the paid version of Backcountry Navigator Pro) all installed themselves since they were already associated with my account from my phone. If you don't have a phone but eventually get a different tablet, you can expect the same sort of continuity.

Thank you. Great info. My wife has a tablet at home she doesn't use......should work perfectly

Backcountry is android only, but Gaia does have an iPad version.

I've been running Gaia for over a year now on my iPhone with paper maps as backup. It's been an excellent app, works on satellite with zero cell coverage, and finds me faster than some Garmin GPS devices while out riding the moto. It's very accurate (no need for a secondary antenna). I think it's $20 from the App Store. Would be cool on an iPad if I was fancy enough to own one. You can download tracks and waypoints and have them uploaded to your device. You can choose many different map types (USFS, topo, city, etc).

note: when tracking yourself constantly or laying down tracks, it uses a good amount of battery. If in the vehicle, that's fine. On the moto, I leave the phone on 'airplane mode' and turn off 'airplane mode' when I need the gps. Saves the battery a LOT.

My Android bases tablet also has built in GPS but it's very spotty and not as accurate as an external GPS. So I run the dual GPS which is Bluetooth o my tablet. Way more accurate.

We had a brief note about this product in issue #1 of OutdoorX4 towards the back of the magazine on page 76. Check it out here: http://issue1.outdoorx4.com

As an aside, how are y'all mounting your tablets? Is there a specific Ram Mount you recommend? I'm using the Samsung Galaxy 7 tablet I believe.

MotionX on iPad

Ive been using MotionX HD on an full size iPad for a while now. Like that it seems to have been built as a vehicle gps with large easy to see and use buttons for most navigation tasks, unlike trying to use my Garmin Oregon 650 handheld. (have not used android tablet/backcountry to compare). Wish i had gone with a iPad mini for this as the full size tablet consumes to much real estate on my dashboard.

Just purchased a Android Samsung Tab S 8.4 to evaluate/compare size and os/app.

im a fairly active geocacher (out of the 324,000 cachers that are tracked i'm ranked 325th in the world).
having a hand held is critical so i will continue to have the handheld on my dash.
