National Park Fees Increase

No car is extreme, but if Yellow Stone was just discovered today, you would not cover is with parking lots

Imagine the serenity in Yosemite Valley if the only way in was a set of boots and a backpack...

That's the exact sentiment of some people's opposition to ORVs and that isn't a bad thing. It means there's a common ground where we can approach that person and exchange point of views.

---

To summarize my dilemma: These are places that belong to all US Citizens. All 300+ million of us. Except when I'm there. Then GTFO because I don't need to see you and your kids taking a selfie 10ft away from a 3/4 ton bison. Yellowstone isn't a f'ing petting zoo.

oh shit...don’t get me started on ORVs. Half tempted to get a job with BLM or the FS just so I can be a dick to them lol

As did I...

“National Parks belong to all Americans. Rather than an overall fee increase for all I would like to see a tiered entry fee with foreign visitors paying a higher amount. It’s great that we have so many visitors but the owners of public lands should not have to bear the added cost as a result of high visitation from non-owners.”

The number of visitors is never going to go down. I can think of 2 national parks I've done where buses would be preferable.

I just visited Harper's Ferry, WV, a historical little town made famous during the run up to the civil war. I was there when the leaves where changing. There was a crazy amount of people. We parked a few miles away at the visitors center and rode a shuttle into town. The town could never support individual cars and SUVs. We spent some time exploring then grabbed a shuttle back to the visitors center.

I felt the same way when I visited Yellowstone. We had a rental SUV and drove to every attraction. Most had parking lots. It was kind of ridiculous. Old Faithful was the most ridiculous. With the pressure that Yellowstone sees, I'd be in favor of banning Cars/suvs. Just a continuous shuttle. Wear a backpack and do it all by foot/bus. The iconic places are just different. I'd like to see shuttles and rest rooms only. No food stands, gift shops, parking lots, etc. There are still plenty of places to be off the grid with my expo rig.

I wasn't talking about shuttles, I'm talking about outside tour groups in full sized tour buses discharging hundreds of people at a time at a spot. Hundreds of people who were walking around with selfie sticks (no joke) and with zulu foxtrots to give about nature or social courtesies.

Shuttles are wonderful, the setup in Zion is a good example.

This is good news! Want to know what did the trick?

Public comment.

From the Washington Post:
An analysis by the National Parks Conservation Association showed that 98 percent of 110,000 public comments opposed the dramatic increase.

Never believe that we can't make a difference.
