So the plan is for trail runs at 9am, we will have a tailgate meeting and roll out at 9:20 Please be ready, have your lunch or snacks packed, water, more water, vehicle fueled up, fluids checked, and a belly full of MOJO Griddle Pancakes BEFORE 9am. I would have to have to rush the trail or cut things short on the trail because of delays in the morning.

Is FRS going to be your primary means of communication for this run? I have ham and cb. I do have a $10 off spend of $30 or more at Sport Chalet - excuse to pick up an FRS radio too? In all the years of events, I've never needed one.

2m ham 146.460 will be primary, but I know that not everyone has a license, FRS will be secondary. I have CB, but hate using it and will avoid it at all cost. there are normally spare frs radios, you could probably borrow one if you want

OK - Sport Chalet has a Cobra pair for $30, my cost would be $20. 16 mile radio vs more expensive 23 mile radio - is there any 'real' effective difference for trail use? Will probably just borrow one if someone doesn't mind.

I was looking at 16 mile ones because the are cheaper. Honestly, at $20 I'd buy em

unless anyone has any objections we will use frs (gmrs) channel 16 (462.575)

In my limited experience "no" (keep in mind I thought they were "walkie talkie's" rather than "FRS radios" until a year or so ago!). You need enough range to hit the front of the line from the back of the line. If we were in Nebraska with a clear line of sight, maybe there would be a difference, in our terrain, if there are two hilltops between the front and the back, neither is going to hit.

My personal favorite radio is my handheld HAM. (it's not special enough that I've taken the time to be official, so to speak) I say handheld for one simple reason, it transfers from one vehicle to another easily. I happen to have three off road vehicles, and I'm cheap. There are cheap Chinese HAM's that I've heard good reports about (relative to price), and more expensive versions.

I'm a desert racer at heart (OK, I'm a rock crawler at heart, but pulling the desert racer card for this story). We use 2 way radio's (or modified HAM's) for communications in the low 150 something or other Hz band (a radio head can identify exactly which Hz, or I can go look, if really needed). I need to get off my dead ass and get my HAM license...I'm inherently lazy...enough said. I have the bling hand held set up that I got from my local Ham Radio Outlet. Told the guy what I wanted to do with the radio, and he took care of the rest. I got a name brand handheld HAM, 12v charger, and a bling antenna out the door for less than $200. On a one time basis, I was able to communicate with our race car from 50 miles away (Coco's Corner to 50 miles up the coast if you're familiar with Baja).

You do need to get off your ass and get your ticket - it is soooo easy for the tech license.

I've got truck mounted dual band ham and CB and a dual band HT when I'm out of the truck. One of the cheap Chinese models that's been just fine - the $100 Woxun, not the super cheap $50 BaoFeng. Reviews on QRS or one of the ham boards said for the add'l $50 the Woxun was worth it compared to the BaoFeng. Shoot, they probably come out of the same factory as far as we know!!!

Not knowing if I have a job past tomorrow - not going to spend the $$ even on the cheap FRS. Been wheeling since '04 and never have run accross the need for FRS until this run.

REMINDER: See below for event schedule and info. Exact change is REQUIRED - we will not be making change on site so... You can bring exact change i.e. one $20 bill and one $10 bill OR you can just donate two $20 bills to the Boy Scouts.

AGAIN, bring EXACT change of $30 and your completed and signed Hold Harmless form!

NO ARRIVALS BEFORE NOON FRIDAY!

Just so everyone is aware, there are a few more rigs coming this year. What does that mean to you? That means that the camp could get a bit crowded. PLEASE NOTE THE OVERFLOW AREAS ON THE MAP - IF YOU WANT ELBOW ROOM, OR PEACE AND QUIET, THAT IS THE PLACE TO BE. THE "UPPER CAMP" AREA BY THE GATE IS HISTORICALLY UNDERUTILIZED AS ARE THE OVERFLOW AREAS NEAR IT. UPPER CAMP HAS A BATHROOM TOO AND ALL ARE A SHORT WALK FROM GROUND ZERO AT THE MAIN FIRE PIT :)

Also, here is a reminder of the event schedule. Please make note that the swap meet is looseley organized i.e. no hard set time or place so please handle these details on your own. Same goes for trail runs and other activities. Additionally, please note the timeline on Saturday - this is our big day so make sure you don't miss out on the free pancake breakfast, T-shirt distribution and group photo.

*If you are competing in the Dutch Oven competetion I strongly recommend that you be in camp and cooking by 3 PM to ensure that we are all eating at 5 PM. Raffle will be at 6 PM after we eat and judge the contest.

*IF YOU ARE ARRIVING AFTER DARK, FOR SAFETY'S SAKE PLEASE BE SAFE. THERE WILL BE GROUND TENTS, KIDS, DOGS, GEAR ETC SO PLEASE BE CAREFUL AND CONSIDERATE WHEN MOVING VEHICLES IN CAMP - RUDELY JOCKEYING FOR POSITION LATE AT NIGHT WITH YOUR MUSIC THUMPING, BRIGHT LIGHTS AND A LOUD EXHAUST MAY CAUSE THE NATIVES TO BECOME RESTLESS...

IF I SEE IT OR HEAR ABOUT IT, YOU WILL HEAR ABOUT IT. 'NUFF SAID.

It's the new thing. I've found that HAM will get you the need to know info on runs like this, walkie talkies get you the chit-chat...nobody even knows what a CB is anymore unless they like talking to truckers.

pretty much sums it up, if we can get away with it, I would much rather go Ham only

I really need to pony ip for a ham radio soon, as well as my license.. it's on my list of stuff to do...

I have a few of the Baofeng radios, $32 on amazon with prime shipping. Not that user friendly, but work really well. $15 for the testing and you are set for 10 years before you need to renew.

But think I was too slow to get into this run

Here is my thinking on this, I wanted to keep the group small, last year i had close to 20 rigs, on a Black Diamond run that started 40 mins from camp. I did not want to run into the time constraints we had last time. That being said, camp is only a couple of miles from where we hit dirt, and this is an easy run. I am going to say, everyone on the waitlist comes along, and we will call that the limit. I dont want to ditch anyone. We need to make sure everyone is ready on time. Meet at 9 for a quick tailgate, roll out of camp at 9:20 Nobody break anything, or get stuck, or lost (that one is mostly for me) and we should be able to have a nice day in the forest without having to rush.

As for the actual route, I know the first half of it, and have a few options for the second half. Things have been a bit crazy and I have not had a chance to sit down with the maps and decide on the second half, but I will figure out something by the time we get to that point in the trail . . . . . . hopefully

Sounds good to me :) if there's anyone that just wants to ride along, I'll have a couple free seats as well.
