I never read the book, but I'm usually one to be careful of Hollywood's "Based on a true story" tagline...
One of the only times in the film where you get to know a little more about Luttrel and engage fully with him during his struggle is when he is in the care of the villagers, clutching a hand grenade, doing impressions of Achmed the Dead Terrorist. Dragged off to his beheading, to be saved again by the villagers... None of this happened.
I know never to use a film as a history lesson.
This is still a gripping action movie, but it does take the based on a true story thing and almost departs entirely.
