My plans call for a separate house battery and a solar panel on the cap. Still, you raise an interesting point. I know a radio like that needs a 15 amp circuit. I wonder how much power it draws when it is just "idling", as it were?

I did an experiment on the drive to MRV to determine my 7900 draws less than 5 amps on recieve. However, when transmitting it blows the 5 amp fuse you put in the wrong spot.

I just picked up a V71 and really like its functions and the ability to cross band makes it a great tool in the field.

A few years ago I bought a 30' collapsible mast and Laird antenna. The set up worked great for remote pitting desert races with the Kenwood radio I already had in my truck. Recently it seemed I could barely transmit across the parking lot.

Brian (@jismay) is somewhat of a radio head, we sucked him into the Dust Junkies Racing team, and unofficially declared him to be our designated radio head after we discovered he had more than "push to talk" skills. Brian took a look at my set up and determined that for some unknown reason I took the adapter from the coax to the Laird antenna off and threw it in a toolbox. Screwing a regular coax fitting into the antenna damaged (broke) the contacts in the antenna end.

I was going to take the antenna in to Ham Radio Outlet to see if it could be fixed. Laziness got the best of me and I decided to order a new antenna. I ordered this set up from PCI Race Radios...

I'm sure I could have sourced the items cheaper than what PCI charges, but went with them anyway as they are big supporters of off highway motorsports.

I'll be remote pitting at the Mint 400 in a couple of weeks, see how it works then.

That's what I'm trying to figure out. $500+ is a lot of investment for the extremely limited use I think I'd be getting out of one of these units. Seems the remote display with dual band usually come with the higher price tag. Which is a bummer.

I was planning on testing for general next month. But I know I'll only be using this when I'm in a group. Trying to figure out how much gear I really need.

I got my goods from PCI yesterday, I wasn't in a rush to get it so I went with the cheapest shipping, still got everything next day!

I have a FT-8800 that has served me quite well for all the reasons stated before. With separate memory banks for each side it is nice to program with data from RFinder and designate alternate stretches of the trip for left or right operation. Allowing for you to monitor the area you are in and heading into. Well worth the time and money to get it into the truck.

Looking to supplement with a 78/900 running APRS with XASTIR. Now if I could only find the time to get that setup solid on the workbench and figure out where to mount it in the truck.
