Forum Changes, Articles, Etc

Over the next couple weeks we'll be tweaking things a bit. We're working on new themes (color schemes) as well as the CMS (Content Management System).

If you note the "articles" tab at the top, I'll be looking for interesting trip reports, posts etc that we will promote to article status. What's the difference you say? Well, if I promote your post like I did with the excellent Fossil Hunting on the Potomac post, your post becomes a published article and you are on your way to fame as search engines will now pluck that out of cyberspace the next time someone searches "fossils, potomac, etc" ;)

Experimenting as we go to make the site more FUN!

There's something missing

My computer screen

Beth's computer screen

Both, side by side same thread page, same time

What up wit dat? Beth wrote this wonderful thread report about her Potomac trip, and it appears the Mod Gods have promoted it to a greater status than a mere thread. Except, I can't find it, or read it, or reply to the thread.

Does "Article" status eliminate the original thread? If so, do any questions, answers and replies disappear too? Help! I feel so left out! Is it time to shout "conspiracy" already? :tinfoil

I do see that when I'm logged out, the Articles tab is displayed, but if I hit the "View Original Post" link at the bottom of the Fossil article, I can't see the pictures - because I'm not logged in......:rofl

And you will continue to not see pictures if you're not logged in.

Goodies are reserved for members. And if you're not logged in, the forum has no idea if you're a member or not.

No sense in wasting bandwidth on folks who don't wish to become part of the fun.

In fact, more developing in that area soon. Stay tuned! :spy:lurk

This is an option given while promoting a thread to an article, to either keep the original thread or not. In most cases, articles will be posted as articles (gear reviews, etc...), but on the occasion that we see a post by a user that needs to be an article, I think leaving the original thread intact is a good idea.

As for the replies, etc, I don't know, as I've only promoted one post to an article, and it was my tutorial on posting images, which was/is a closed and sticky thread to begin with.

I still don't the articles tab, either.

I would like to see a thread that gets transfered to an article to still be available in its orginal form and location on the forum. That is all...carry one.

That's the intent.

Awesome.

In other site news, today I blocked a bushel of IP addresses from Russia, China and Japan. Even 2 in Kansas. Many we're known forum spammers sniffing around, and the others just looked... Un-American ;)

Also, the subject of Tapatalk has come up via several members. Tapatalk was great in its inception, but they've whored out the latest update with ads and garbage. Many have complained about how all the ads show up as Forum Topics. So, I don't think we'll be installing it, it's become an insidious form of spamming where the forum is laced with links instead of posts. No thanks.

Shame about TapaTalk... Although I've suspected it wouldn't take long.

It's interesting to look at iTunes top grossing apps, they're FREE APPS, with boatloads of "in-app purchases" for users to install in-app upgrades and features. I'm sorry but, to put out an app as a full version, put a $0.00 price tag on it so it shows up in the Free Section, but then put in ads and remove features unless you in-app purchase those features and pay to remove ads, is despicable.

Worse than that though is that TapaTalk is a PAID app, and you STILL get flooded with ads in their latest version.

Perhaps the exodus of users will help them rethink their position.

On a POSITIVE note, we do have a wonderful functional mobile theme here at AAV, and it's free to use, and of course ad free.

I've watched it, but I didn't like how it lays things out.. I was interested because I could post photos with it, but that to me was the only feature I needed. Everything else works on the mobile version just fine, I can also switch to the full version on my phone too.
