Interesting, email and text via HF. That might just make me look at HF capability a little closer.

Mark, I can demo HF email with Winmor, if you want to see it. I wasn't aware of texting capability via HF, but am not surprised. We aren't talking large attachments. Text and very small files only, as the connection is slow. To do large attachments, a hardware investment of around $1500, over and above the radio cost is needed. DaveK has that setup. Field Day with the OAUSA bunch would be good to check it out.

Yeah, its very small files. But to be honest, Ill never email out an attachment over HF unless it was a dire situation. Maybe a page from a manual for a trail fix or something.

The texting I found out can also be done station to station using APRS. I haven't done all the research through it yet. You can also use Winmor as a P2P setup and email between stations. Haven't tried that either.

The text that Im using allows you to get onto the data freq's (7.070, 14.070) and remotely chat with people. Def comes in handy when you are too far out or the band sucks. Chatting through there will have better clarity at times as you really dont need to hear the person using your ears.

I wish I lived closer to some of you guys so that I could show you what Im talking about. Maybe one day Ill make a rendevous.

Ive also been "told" that you can do Winmor over VHF/UHF which would make the speed bump up a little better.

I have tested/used Winmor via VHF and P2P, so it works well. Text messages back and forth.

I guess with an internet linked repeater Winmor would be useful with VHF/UHF... Didn't really think about that.

Taugust what did you have to change to use winmor with VHF?

My apologies. After looking back, I only tested p2p on 80m. Looking at the help file, it appears you can use VHF on the packet connection.

Generally speaking, AT&T has the best coverage area, followed by Verizon. YMMV.

A cell phone signal booster in one of the rigs saved the life of a man involved in a motorcycle accident that we encountered on an overland trip a few years back. We were able to reach emergency responders and get the him to the hospital in time to save his life. Unfortunately his wife died on the scene. I would encourage everyone to install one. When minutes count, it can make the difference.

That's what I carry a Spot for. I can't say that a Spot would be better in that situation though.

I have a post or two in my build thread about my cell phone booster, how to properly install one, and what to expect.

Maybe it's late-night post-cocktail blindness but I checked your build thread and didn't see that info... Lots of other good stuff like the NMO antenna mounts, but no cell booster stuff. Am I losing what's left of my mind? :)

Hmm, yeah, oops. I'll get on that. 12 hour work days are killing me for the foreseeable future right now though.

Understood! I'm looking forward to reading about it but there's no rush. Good luck with those long days, I know what that's like...
