... And live in CA.

New Cummins diesel. What are the pitfalls and is this a bridge too far?

Your state of residency is...

I was CA for my entire career... outside of CA. No state taxes, etc. Are you a WA resident?

Problem solved. Register it in WA. You can do it via mail I believe or with the assistance of relatives.

But what if that fell through? Anyone know any details to clarify this for anyone in a similar situation?

Yeah the plot thickens, I'm trying to discern if it is 50 state emissions or merely 49...

@Mr. Leary what do your emissions decals state?

I didn't think anything was built as 49 states anymore. Could be wrong.

I don't know the rules for military but a CA residents couldn't buy a new vehicle outside of CA at one time. I know, I tried...

So reading the DMV site, it's clear as mud. Seems if the emissions sticker shows that it is 50 state legal, you can buy it but you are responsible for paying the taxes on it. This likely means you won't be able to finance this into the payment. That's assuming the dealer will deal with you. Good luck!

I tried to do the opposite, buy in California with my residency in Georgia, only to discover I would have to pay California sales tax if I drove off the lot. If I had it trucked off the lot and across the state line I would pay no tax. California's DMV and tax websites made all this clear as mud too. Good luck!

I'll ask at work today Dave. I know we do dealer trades with out of state dealers time to time.

I was military with WA as my home of record stationed in CA. I mostly kept my vehicles registered in WA. And had a WA driver's license.

I talked to my sales guys. This is the story I'm getting. Assuming it's a 50 state truck (I "think" all are 50 state now), you'll pay tax/registration for the state you are registering it in. If you register in CA, make sure you use your "non-resident military" registration discount.

So, you could buy in AZ and that dealer would process it for registration in CA?
