Wayward_skye’s third gen 4 Runner build.

It’s been a while since I’ve done anything with Sky’s 4R. Just been driving it weekly while she is in Namibia. The wheels were looking pretty rough and didn’t have a matching spare wheel/tire. Every time she needed a tire rotation they would have to dismount/mount the spare to get it in the rotation.

Fortunately Gabe had a couple equally rough looking wheels sitting around and hooked us up!! I don’t have any close ups of the before but you can see in some of the previous post the wheels didn’t look great.

A friend is production manager at Superior Powder Coat in Arlington WA and is my go to for all things powder coat. They do great work if your in the area. They did the job on my Taco wheels years back and have held up well! They bead blast, treat, and powder coat. I was concerned with the amount of pitting the wheels had but they were able to clean them up!!

The hub caps are an other story. They are in rough shape, cleaned them up as best I could and sprayed with rattle can. The color match isn’t great, my friend from the powder coat shop is looking for a better match rattle can paint. I can get new caps on Amazon for 50 bucks. If I can get a better color match I’ll go that route.

nice progress. I'm liking the simple layout of your drawer system. Will the fride have a slider?

No, the fridge was strapped down and was fixed. She wanted access to the fridge from inside in inclement weather. The beauty of and ARB fridge is she was able to sell it prior to departure for more than she paid!

Lose the caps. The wheels by themselves look great without the caps, which end up drawing more attention if they look haggard compared to a refinished rim. Besides, if you have to change the tire that's just an extra piece of useless plastic to get in the way, damage, or lose. FWIW I run 80 series wheels without the caps and they look great and are easier to clean. Try it out and see what you think.

Well with my truck up for sale and needing a ski rig for this winter I had to get on this wheel bearing replacement. They have been howling for some time and I’ve finally carved out the time to get this done. I was hoping to use my new press but Mr Toyoda had other plans requiring a special $300 tool so my local NAPA performed the press work.

More maintenance on the 4R! The u joints and CV joint had seen better days, so out come the prop shaft. When I removed the u joint attached from the CV to the prop shaft the CV fell apart! That's bigger challenge than I’m equipped for so off to Drivelines NW.

Whoops! At least it fell apart when you weren't driving it....
The yoke at the forward end of the prop shaft had to be replaced, cut off and welded a newused one on. Guess a 1998 is starting to get to the point that parts like that are rare.

Im surprised. Pretty sure they have used that same yoke since the 80's through early 2000's

Had a local company rebuild the prop shaft, Drivelines Northwest. 48 hour turn time with sourcing a yoke!! Of course the pup had to get in on the action!

At the gate keeper I managed to get through with minimal scraping of the running boards thanks to Wills spotting but the muddy shelf was to much and didn't want to push my luck.

The next day the running boards came off with permission and I trimmed up the tail pipe that would contact the bumper when flexed up.
