OutdoorX4 Magazine Official Family Overlander Build Thread - 100 Series Land Cruiser

That sounds easy enough, Cris. Thanks a ton for your input. I'll probably go with 6 to 8 gauge wire to be safe. Tis always better to go overboard than have the wire lose too much voltage. I'm guessing, without having gotten online to confirm, that all I need to do is pop the panel off where the plug socket is located and run the wire through the paneling to my second battery? That may be a chore.

Routing the wire is almost always the hardest part. While not required, wire loom is also inexpensive insurance especially if the wire is anywhere it will rub on a corner with vehicle vibrations

Dan can meet you at OVX and help with the install, I'll tell him to bring his aluminum super tape!

I only wish I could be there to supervise!

Dont worry Bob, I will hold a beer and make "encouraging" comments in your place

Right on! I bought the wire a little earlier today and headed back to the auto store as I forgot to pick-up new battery terminals for the second battery. I'll start the work and if there's something that has me stumped or is left over, I'll post up. Certainly any/all help and guidance is appreciated. Thanks fellas!

I think the rear 12v outlet is tied to the other outlets. If so the relay in the engine bay can be easily modified with a jumper wire to provide constant power. This is the very first mod I did to my truck so that I could charge my phones etc with the engine off.

Regardless it's still a better idea to run new wire back there. I am not a fan of the 12v plug so I cut it off and hard wired it in. Now no chance of it wiggling out!

I agree with Fireball on the hard wire. Buy a second powercord if you think that you'll need to operate the fridge outside the vehicle or use it elsewhere.

With the Engel, you can hardwire it in without destroying the cord. The 12v plug can be removed off of the cord exposing this:

Simply use two insulated blade connectors and wire/fuse them. They slip right onto the blades of that plug. I used additional electrical tape around the plug to the wires to ensure that they didn't back off the plug. No extra cord needed, and easy to reverse if necessary.

Yeah... I had that when i had an Engel.... brilliant contraption! Does ARB have something similar?
My NL has a Hella connector (for now)

The newer ARB units have similar setup. I believe the new style 12 volt cord can be purchased as well as a matching female receptacle

Good to know. I skipped the female socket with mine since it was not even visible. I do love a clean installation though.

Really enjoyed reading this build as I picked up a 100 series Land Cruiser last weekend to replace the Jeep.

That's awesome, Andy! I'll be adding more to this build thread over the next few weeks. Still awaiting a number of items for inclusion in Phase III of the build. Stay tuned.

In the meantime, here's the most recent shot from the Phase II portion:

Here's one more. This one is a better shot of the ARB bumper and High Intensity LED 7" lights (which are quite impressive BTW).
